What to know about men's clothing
Menswear rewards buyers who ignore the fit name and read the numbers. Athletic, slim, classic and relaxed mean different things at every maker, but a chest measurement, a sleeve length and an inseam mean the same thing everywhere, and two minutes with a tape on a shirt you already like beats any size chart. Fit is also where money shows first: a modest shirt that fits the shoulders looks better than an expensive one that does not, because shoulders are the one place no tailor can economically move.
Cloth is the second lever. The fiber and weave on the tag decide whether a jacket holds its shape, whether trousers survive a season of sitting, and whether that sweater pills by December. Every guide below explains the cloths its garment actually comes in.
Each guide covers the named styles, the collar, cuff and cut terms listings use, how the garment should sit on a body, and what to check before paying. Start with the garment, or with a single detail such as fit or rise when that is the question you came with.
