Polyester, usually blended with elastane, replaces cotton here, spun and knitted so the fibers pull sweat along their surface to the outside of the shirt. Wicking is that outward movement of moisture, and it is the only reason the style exists.

Synthetic yarn does not soak up water the way cotton does, so moisture travels instead of sitting still. Paired with a light knit, often 140 to 180 grams per square meter, the shirt dries in minutes rather than hours. Elastane at two to five percent adds stretch in every direction so the shoulders move through a golf swing without dragging. Many versions also carry a UPF rating, a measure of how much ultraviolet light the cloth blocks, which cotton of the same weight does not match.

Beside a cotton piqué polo the split is simple: cotton feels better and looks better, synthetic performs better and smells worse. Polyester holds body oils that bacteria feed on, so a hard-worn performance polo often keeps a faint odor even after washing. Against a performance tee, the collar is what buys you entry to a golf course or a club dining room. Against a dress shirt, none of this belongs in a formal office.

Golf, tennis, hot and humid climates, and travel where you rinse a shirt in a sink and wear it again the next morning are the clear cases. Heavy sweaters gain most, since cotton simply goes soaked and heavy. Keep it out of a business casual rotation if your office reads clothes closely, because the sheen of standard polyester is recognizable from across a room.

Choose a matte or heathered face over a shiny one, since the finish is what makes a performance polo look like gym kit. Flatlock seams, where two edges butt together and are stitched flat instead of overlapping, stop the rubbing that raises a rash over eighteen holes. Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets, because both coat the fibers and block the wicking you paid for. A cup of white vinegar in the rinse strips the oils behind the smell.
