What to know about kids & baby
Buy children's clothes by measurement, never by the age on the label. Sizes run from baby months to toddler T sizes and then numbered children's sizes, the bands overlap each other. Two children of the same age routinely wear sizes two apart. Height and weight against the maker's own chart will tell you more in ten seconds than the age band ever does. It is worth re-measuring every few months at the younger end, where children can climb a full size in a season.
One category here carries a safety rule rather than a preference. In the US, sleepwear above size 9 months and up to size 14 must either fit snugly or be flame resistant, because loose fabric ignites more easily and holds an air gap that feeds a flame. Snug cotton pajamas look too small on the hanger by design. Infant sleepwear at 9 months and under is exempt when it also meets set length limits and is labeled with the age in months.
Everything else is about surviving a childhood. Knees, elbows and cuffs fail first, closures need to be manageable by the child who wears them, and anything that cannot go through a hot wash will not last. Each guide below covers sizing, construction and what to check.
