Cardigans split by what happens at the neck, and that choice sets how formal the whole garment looks. A shawl collar runs as one continuous rolled band around the neck and down both sides of the opening. That adds weight at the chest and reads as the dressiest version. A V-neck cardigan mirrors a V-neck sweater and slips under a jacket without bulk. A full zip drops the buttons entirely and lands closest to sportswear.

Gauge, meaning how many stitches fit into an inch of knitting, decides where a cardigan can go. Around 12 to 18 stitches per inch the knit is smooth and thin enough to disappear under a blazer. At 5 to 7 stitches per inch it is warm enough to be the outer layer and far too thick to fit under anything. The way panels are joined matters too: fully fashioned knitting shapes each piece on the machine and links the seams by hand, so the shoulder curves with your body, while cut-and-sew cardigans are knitted as flat yardage and scissored to shape, leaving bound raw edges inside and a stiffer shoulder.

A pullover keeps a clean chest, and the cardigan trades that for a front opening, which means it can come halfway off and stay on your shoulders. A quarter-zip reaches a similar temperature range through a much shorter opening and a sportier face. The comparison that really matters is with a blazer, since a chunky shawl-collar cardigan does the same visual job of covering a shirt and framing the chest, with none of the structure and none of the formality. In an office that stopped expecting jackets, this is what replaced them.

Buildings with unpredictable heating make the case for one, since you can open a cardigan without taking it off or untucking anything. Fine merino suits offices and travel, while a heavy shawl collar in lambswool suits cold houses and stands in for an indoor jacket. Broad chests should think twice about wearing one open, because two vertical bands falling either side of the torso widen the frame. Younger buyers often find buttons ageing, and a full zip solves that without giving up the function.

Button it up entirely and study the front, where the two edges should meet in a straight vertical line with no pull between buttons. Count the fastenings, since five or six spaced closely hold the front flat where three widely spaced ones gape. Wash it inside out on a wool cycle, dry it flat on a towel, and straighten the front edges by hand while damp, because that is the only moment you can reset an opening that has stretched.
