Men's Swim Trunks style guide

Men's Swim Briefs

Swim briefs strip the leg away entirely, leaving the least drag of anything you can swim in.

Also called: racing briefs, competition briefs, lap briefs

The basics

What to know about Men's Swim Briefs

A swim brief covers the hips and nothing below them. Side seams measure roughly 2 to 3 inches, leg openings sit high on the thigh. A drawcord runs through the waistband because elastic on its own loosens the moment it is wet. Coverage is the trade you make for the smallest wetted surface in swimwear.

Less fabric means less water dragged along with you. Every square inch pushes water ahead of it, and a brief carries a fraction of what trunks carry. Racing settled on this shape a century ago. Two fabrics compete: nylon with elastane feels soft and stretches well but breaks down in chlorine within a few months, while polyester blended with PBT, a stiffer chlorine resistant fiber, survives daily pool use for a year or more. Seams stay narrow and flat, and a front lining panel keeps the fabric opaque once it is wet.

Jammers solve the same problem with more cloth, ending just above the knee, trading a little speed for sun cover and no thigh rub. Trunks hang loose, hold a mesh liner and balloon the second you push off a wall. Board shorts sit at the opposite extreme and are close to useless for laps. Choosing between a brief and a jammer is a social decision rather than a technical one, because both swim well and one of them gets looked at.

Lap swimmers and anyone training seriously notice the difference inside one session. Many public pools in Europe require fitted swimwear and turn loose shorts away at the door, so a brief solves entry in a single item. Surf takes them off you, so leave them at the pool. A family beach is the other place to think twice, if you would spend the afternoon aware of what you are wearing.

Sizing runs small, so buy your true waist and expect it to feel tight new, since the fabric relaxes about half a size after a few swims. Make sure the drawcord is a cord you can knot rather than a decorative tie sewn flat. Cold fresh water immediately after every swim, before the chlorine dries into the fiber, buys you months of life. Never wring one out or put it near a dryer; press the water into a towel and hang it in shade.

Best for

When to choose this style

  • Lap swimming and training, where drag is the thing slowing you down.
  • European public pools that ban loose shorts at the door.
  • Packing light, since a brief folds down to the size of a wallet.
  • Swimmers who hate a wet leg of fabric flapping on the turn.

Style comparison

Men's Swim Briefs vs similar men's swim trunks

  • Hybrid Shorts

Hybrid shorts swim like trunks and finish like chinos, so you can stay in them all day.

  • Jammers

Jammers hug the leg to just above the knee, giving racing fit with far more coverage than a brief.

  • Board Shorts

Board shorts run to the knee on a flat laced waist, so nothing digs in when you lie on a board.
