Men's Crewneck Sweater

A crewneck closes the neck with a ribbed band sewn in a full circle at the base of the throat, and that band is the entire mechanism. It has to stretch over a head, roughly 22 to 23 inches around, then pull back to sit flat at 16 to 18. Everything else about the garment, the sleeves and the uninterrupted body panel, is ordinary knitting.

How that band is made decides how long the sweater lives. A 2x2 rib, meaning two knit stitches alternating with two purl stitches, recovers far better than a flat knitted edge, and a band knitted separately and linked on holds its shape longer than one cut from the body and bound. Gauge decides the sweater's job, since 12 stitches per inch and finer disappears under a jacket while 5 to 7 makes the knit your outer layer. The hem band matters as much as the neck band, because a crewneck ending below the hip bone bunches under anything you put over it.

A V-neck opens the same knit into a point so a shirt collar can show. It reads dressier and needs a shirt to look intentional at all. Quarter-zips add an adjustable throat and a small collar, useful in a room whose temperature moves. Turtlenecks seal the neck completely and stand in for the shirt underneath. This is the only one of the four that vanishes under a buttoned shirt collar and also works over a plain tee with nothing else. It is the shape most men own first.

First knitwear purchases belong here, and fine merino in navy or charcoal covers offices, dinners and cold trains without further thought. Long necks carry the high round band well. Short, thick necks are crowded by it and usually look better in a shallow V. Chunky versions are effectively a different garment, so size them over the shirt you will actually wear underneath, since a 5 gauge knit holds no spare room inside.

Pull the neckband wide with both hands and release it, because a band that snaps flat will still grip in year three while one that hangs slack is already finished. The shoulder seam belongs at the outer edge of your shoulder rather than down your arm, since a dropped shoulder in a fine gauge bunches under a jacket. Rub a sleeve against itself for ten seconds and watch for fuzz, as early fuzz predicts early pilling. Wash cool, press the water out inside a rolled towel and dry it flat, since a wet knit hung on a hanger stretches under its own water weight and keeps the new length.
