The basics

What to know about rise

Rise measures the distance from the crotch seam, the point where the four leg seams meet, up to the top edge of the waistband. That one measurement sets where the pants sit on your torso. Where they sit decides how they feel when you bend, how long your legs look, and which tops resolve above them. Two pairs with identical waist sizes can sit 3 inches apart on your body if their rises differ.

No universal inch band defines low, mid or high, because makers draft rise on their own house patterns and the numbers shift between men's and women's blocks. Judge by landmark instead: against the hip bones, just below the navel, or at the natural waist, the narrowest point of your torso. To compare pairs at home, lay each flat and run a tape from the crotch seam straight up to the waistband's top edge. Then match that number against a pair you already trust.

Read the three options as positions on your torso, not as fashion eras. Each one moves the visual waistline, and the visual waistline is what sets your leg-to-torso proportion.
