Moving the seam changes what the shoulder can do. A standard set-in sleeve, stitched at the shoulder point, fixes the arm opening to one spot and resists movement past it. This one runs unbroken from underarm to collar, so no seam sits directly on top of the shoulder to pull or bind, and the arm can swing overhead with noticeably more room. That underarm junction, where several seams meet at once, takes real stress every time you reach, so it needs dense, reinforced stitching to survive regular wear.

A crew neck tee uses the standard set-in shoulder seam, which gives a crisper, more defined shoulder line than this cut ever will, since a raglan trades that definition for range of motion. A henley shares the same jersey body and the same set-in shoulder in most versions, differing only at the placket rather than the sleeve. A performance polo chases the same mobility goal through synthetic fabric instead of seam placement, so the two solve a similar problem from opposite directions.

Broad shoulders and sloped shoulders both do well here, since there is no fixed seam trying to sit at an exact shoulder point that may not match your actual shape. Anyone who throws, swings or reaches overhead regularly, from batting cages to yard work, gets real value from the extra movement. Skip it if you want a tailored, structured shoulder line, since the diagonal seam softens that edge by design and reads more casual than a set-in sleeve ever does. Narrow shoulders looking to appear broader gain little, because a raglan adds no defined edge the way a set-in seam does.

Fit by chest measurement the same way you would a crew tee, since there is no separate shoulder seam to size or adjust, and no tailor can move a raglan seam the way one can take in a set-in shoulder. Check the underarm junction before buying by tugging gently on the seam, since loose or single-row stitching there will not survive many washes. Wash and dry it as you would any jersey tee, and turn it inside out to protect the underarm seam, which takes more friction than any other seam on the shirt.
