Men's Chambray Shirt

Colored warp, white weft. That single decision is the whole cloth: threads running the length of the fabric carry the dye, threads running across it stay undyed, and the face reads soft blue from across a room while showing white flecks in your hand.

Plain weave crosses every thread one over one, the flattest and most stable interlacing there is. Chambray hangs close to the body and offers none of the texture an oxford does. Weight sits at 4 to 6 ounces per square yard, light enough to layer under a knit without adding bulk at the shoulders. Because only the warp holds dye, abrasion at the collar fold, the cuffs and the elbows scrapes color away first. The shirt fades along the lines where it bends. Nothing has gone wrong when that starts; the same mechanism fades a pair of jeans.

Denim uses the identical dye trick in a twill weave, leaving a diagonal line, runs 6 ounces and up, and behaves half like a jacket at the top of that range. The Oxford Cloth Button-Down Shirt weaves in a basket instead, gaining body and texture while losing the close drape. Roughly 60 to 80 degrees is its window worn alone, and it layers under a crew neck sweater or an unstructured jacket below that. Dark trousers plus a tucked chambray shirt clear a smart casual code in most rooms. Two situations argue against it: pairing it with jeans in a similar shade of blue, which reads as a suit made of denim, and any room expecting a tie, since a flecked surface always reads as workwear.

Hold the cloth to a window and look for the white weft, because printed imitations show a flat blue with no cross fleck at all. Feel the weight next, as anything under 4 ounces goes sheer across the shoulders. Give new indigo two washes on its own, then wash cold and inside out afterward to slow the fading at the folds.
