A sleeveless garment ends at the shoulder with a finished armhole and no sleeve: tanks with narrow straps, shells with full shoulder coverage, muscle cuts with dropped openings. The armhole edge is bound, faced or ribbed, and that finish is where quality lives or dies.
No sleeve means the armhole does a sleeve's fitting work alone. A well-cut opening curves close to the body, so nothing shows from the side when you bend or reach. Lazy ones gape at the front and side, exposing the bra band, which no styling repairs. Reach forward and look side-on in the mirror, since the flaw only appears in motion. Beyond fit, this length is the layering base of the whole wardrobe. Shells vanish under blazers and cardigans without bunching at the elbow the way sleeves do. In heat the open armhole vents better than any short sleeve.
Exposure is the trade. Arms and shoulders are fully out, which some dress codes and religious settings disallow, offices historically among them. That is why a sleeveless top often travels with its own cover-up. Bra logistics tighten too. Strap width decides whether standard straps hide. Racerback cuts, where the back narrows between the shoulder blades, need a matching bra or clipped straps.
