Men's Dress Socks

A dress sock is the thinnest sock made, knitted on a cylinder carrying 168 to 200 needles so the fabric arrives smooth faced and close to the weight of shirt cloth. Thinness is the entire point, because a leather dress shoe is lasted with almost no spare volume and anything padded underfoot pushes your instep up into the lacing.

Fiber and rib do the remaining work. Mercerized cotton, cotton treated with caustic soda under tension so each fiber swells round and takes a sheen, gives the quiet gloss most suit socks show. Fine merino delivers the same thinness with warmth and odor resistance at two or three times the price, and silk blends feel best and die soonest. Above the foot the leg is knitted in rib, columns of raised and sunken stitches that act like a spring. That rib plus 2 to 3 percent elastane is what holds a sock on a calf that tapers upward. Over-the-calf versions finish just below the knee and anchor on the widest part of the calf. So they stay up all day without gripping hard.

Stretch the top band and watch the return, since a band that stays wide is already finished. Wash these cool inside a mesh bag and air dry them, because dryer heat cooks the elastane that holds them up.
