What to know about clothing accessories

Accessories are where a small measurement decides everything. Most of them are sized by one number that listings state badly or not at all. Belt length is measured to the middle hole and is not your trouser waist size. Hat size follows the circumference of your head just above the ears, in inches or centimeters. Glove size comes from the measurement around your knuckles. Get any of those wrong by an inch and the piece is unwearable, however good it looks in the photograph. That is why each guide below opens with how to take the measurement.

Sunglasses carry the one specification with a health consequence attached. Look for full UV400 protection or the equivalent claim of one hundred percent UVA and UVB blocking, and treat dark lenses without it as worse than no sunglasses at all, because the tint opens your pupils while letting the damaging light through.

Names in this category are unusually loose, since the same scarf shape carries several names and belt widths appear as either a number or a vague label. The guides give the terms you will actually meet, along with the materials and construction that decide how long each piece survives.
