Men's Field Jacket (Outerwear)

A field jacket carries four pockets across the front, two on the chest and two at the hip, all of them bellows pockets with pleated sides that expand as you fill them. Add a drawstring at the waist and a second one at the hem and you have the M-65, the US Army jacket from 1965 that every modern version copies. That waist cord is not decoration. Pulling it closes the jacket around your body so wind cannot flush warm air out from the bottom.

Cotton sateen or a cotton-nylon ripstop gives the jacket its weight and its ability to take a beating, usually between 6 and 9 ounces per yard. The collar on a true field jacket is hollow and holds a rolled hood behind a zip. That means you can add a hood without carrying one separately. Sleeves fasten with a tab and snap, letting you seal the cuff over a glove. None of it is waterproof, since the cloth is dense enough to shrug off drizzle and will soak through in a real downpour.

A trucker jacket is shorter, cut in denim, and carries only two chest pockets, so it layers under things rather than over them. A harrington is smooth, light and effectively pocketless by comparison, made to look neat rather than to carry anything. Parkas run far longer and add insulation the field jacket does not have. This is the one casual jacket that swallows a sweater, and the waist cinch is what stops that extra room reading as sloppiness.

Spring and fall between roughly 45 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit is exactly its range. It takes a fleece or a chunky knit underneath without binding. Olive drab is the original and reads neutral, while black and navy versions drop the military reference and pass in more settings. Anyone chasing a clean silhouette should pass, because four loaded pockets add visible bulk across the chest and hip. Shorter wearers should study the hem, since a jacket ending below the hip bone shortens the leg.

Size up from your usual shirt size if you plan to layer, then bring the shape back in with the waist cord. Load a pocket and tug the flap, because snaps that pop open under weight will keep doing it. Wash cotton field jackets cold and hang them to dry, since heavy cotton shrinks in a hot dryer and the shrinkage shows up in sleeve length first.
