Relaxed adds room through the seat, thigh and knee while keeping a slight narrowing below it. Compared with a straight jean in the same waist, expect two to three extra inches around the thigh and a hem near 18 inches. This is enough that denim never touches the front of your knee as you walk.

Room in the right places comes from the seat and the rise rather than from sizing up. The seat carries more curve so it clears without dragging the waistband down. The crotch usually sits an inch lower than on a slim pair. This is what buys the ease and also what makes the pair look sloppy when the rise is wrong for you. Cloth counts for more here than in any close cut, since a wide leg in stretch denim has nothing holding it and bags at the knee by evening. Rigid or low-stretch denim at 12 ounces and up keeps falling straight all day.

The same hem width shows up on a straight jean with two or three fewer inches at the thigh. That cut hangs closer through the top half. Baggy drops the taper entirely and pushes the hem past 20 inches, making volume the statement rather than the comfort. Carpenter and utility jeans reach similar roominess through the seat and then bolt hardware onto the leg, which changes what the jean is for. Relaxed gets you the room with none of the signaling, and that is why it survives in workwear and streetwear at the same time.

Long hours seated, long drives and hot weather all point here, since air moves around a leg the denim is not touching. Heavier builds gain the most, as the extra thigh room stops the cloth mapping the leg underneath. Shorter frames should be careful, because volume from the hip down eats visible leg length. Hemming shorter helps more than dropping a waist size. Formal-leaning outfits are the wrong home, given that no depth of indigo makes a wide leg read sharp.

Rise deserves attention before the leg does, since many relaxed cuts sit lower than the label implies and a dropped seat plus a wide leg multiplies the volume until the pair looks two sizes too big. Sit down and stand back up in the fitting room and watch whether the waistband stays where you left it. Hem to a single break or a touch shorter, because a wide leg drags before a narrow one does and a dragged hem on heavy denim frays past repair. Skip the dryer entirely, as heat shortens the leg and slackens whatever stretch the blend carries.
