Wide Leg

Wide leg releases immediately below the seat and drops in a full, even column. The hem is about as wide as the knee or wider, with no taper anywhere. Unlike a flare, which contrasts fitted and full, the wide leg commits to volume from the top, so the fabric never touches the leg below the hip.

Behavior tracks the cloth. In fluid weaves the column moves like a skirt and reads as palazzo tailoring, palazzo being the wide, floor-skimming trouser style. Cut in denim or canvas, it stands off the body in workwear folds. Air circulates the length of the leg, which makes wide cuts the coolest trousers in real heat. A pressed center crease, the vertical fold ironed down the front, turns the same volume from casual to tailored. Anchor the top half, because volume below demands definition above; a high rise plus a tucked or fitted top gives the eye a waistline to hold.

The compromises are practical. A wide hem drags in rain and catches on stair edges. Low rises undercut the look by shortening the visible leg beneath all that volume. Every shoe disappears except the toe. On petite frames a full-length column can swallow the body, so cropped versions ending above the ankle restore the proportion.
