Loops rather than crossed threads make this version. Yarn is knitted into a jersey that stretches both ways, then cut to a boxer's loose outline with a 3 to 5 inch inseam and an open hem. The silhouette reads as a boxer and the behavior does not, since knit cloth drapes onto the thigh instead of hanging clear of it.

Cotton or modal jersey around 140 to 170 grams per square meter with 5 percent elastane is the usual cloth, soft against skin and quiet under trousers. Most pairs now add a contoured pouch, which a woven boxer never carries. You get part of a boxer brief's hold inside a loose leg. The hem separates a good pair from a cheap one, because a raw jersey edge curls into a rope within ten washes while a bound or covered hem lies flat for the life of the garment. Flies run vertical or vanish altogether, since a knit placket gapes where a woven one stays shut.

Boxers in woven poplin move far more air, bunch more under trousers and hold nothing at the front. Boxer Briefs take the same knit and cut it to grip the thigh, which ends the ride up this style still allows. Briefs remove the leg and the drape together. Pinch the fabric if a listing leaves you guessing, as jersey stretches sideways between your fingers and poplin refuses.

Reach for these when a boxer's freedom has to work under real clothes, since soft jersey lies flatter under chinos than woven cloth does. Sleep and weekends fill the rest of their life. Heavy sweating is the wrong test, because knit cotton holds water against skin longer than an open woven leg does. Chafing goes unsolved here too, given that a loose leg still slides.

Stretch the seat between two hands and look through it, because a light jersey that reads sheer on the shelf reads sheer on you. Feel the hem for a bound or covered edge rather than a cut one. Watch the elastane percentage, since anything under 3 percent lets the seat bag by the third wear. Cool or warm water and a rack hold the shape. Meanwhile, a hot dryer shrinks knit cotton in length and returns the leg an inch shorter than you bought.
