Neckline

Turtleneck

Wraps the neck in a folded column of knit.

Also called: polo neck, roll neck, mock neck

The basics

What to know about turtleneck

A turtleneck extends the garment into a knitted tube that climbs the neck and folds back over itself, doubling the fabric where the cold hits. A mock neck stops lower and stands unfolded; a funnel neck is the loose, wide-standing cousin. All three close the neckline conversation entirely.

Covering the neck does double duty. Thermally, the doubled tube seals the gap where scarves usually go, making this the warmest option by construction rather than by fabric. Visually, it builds an unbroken column from jaw to shoulder. That column reads minimal, intellectual and finished without a single accessory. Necklaces disappear against it, so the pairing logic flips to earrings and clean tailoring. A dark turtleneck under a blazer remains one of the few outfits that needs nothing added.

The column asks tolerance in return. Fabric against the throat bothers some wearers to the point of exclusion, and coarse or scratchy wools amplify it. Fiber matters here. Fine merino and cotton knits sit soft where rough wool prickles. Round faces and short necks lose definition inside the tube, where a mock neck keeps most of the warmth while giving the jaw back its line. Watch the fold too; a collar that will not stay folded evenly is knit too loose.

Best for

When it works well

  • Real cold is its argument, because the doubled tube seals the gap every other neckline leaves open.
  • Minimal outfits finish without jewelry, since the column is the statement.
  • Blazers and coats layer over it cleanly, as the high line fills the collar opening.
  • Longer necks balance well, because the tube shortens what open necklines exaggerate.
