Kid's Overalls (Bottoms)

Overalls replace a waistband with a bib and two straps that cross the shoulders, so the garment hangs from the top of the body instead of gripping around the middle. A snug fit at the hip is not required to keep the pants up. The straps do that job instead.

Side buttons or snaps at the hip let the leg width adjust by an inch or so, and most straps buckle through a row of holes, similar to a belt, which is the real growth mechanism. Because nothing has to grip the waist, overalls tolerate a growth spurt that would leave a jean gaping at the back or biting at the front. Denim is the traditional fabric, at a weight close to kid's jeans, though cotton twill and corduroy versions exist as a softer, quieter alternative to denim's stiffness.

Set against jeans, overalls give up a fitted waist for a garment that keeps working through several inches of growth without an adjuster or a new size. Against joggers, they trade elastic-waist speed for a bib front that needs both shoulder straps managed. A romper or a jumpsuit for younger kids solves a similar top-and-bottom problem in one piece with no straps at all, which is faster on and off but offers none of the room to grow that a buckled strap gives.

Growing toddlers and young kids who cycle through sizes quickly get the most out of overalls, along with any family trying to stretch one garment across a longer stretch of a growth chart. A child newly out of diapers is the case to think twice about, since a full bib front means undoing both straps or pulling the whole garment down to the ankles for a bathroom trip, and a child who needs to go now does not have that kind of time. Play involving a lot of climbing also suits overalls less well than a plain pant, since the bib and straps are one more thing to catch on a bar or a fence.

Buckle and unbuckle a strap before buying, since a buckle that needs two hands and real force will not get faster with use. Check that the side snaps run high enough to actually take in a couple of inches at the hip, and look for double-stitched seams at the strap ends, where the whole weight of the garment pulls hardest. Wash denim overalls cold and inside out to hold the color, and dry on low, since overalls lose length the same way jeans do. The honest problem is the one nobody mentions on the label: a proudly toilet-trained child in overalls needs help in the bathroom again, at exactly the age they were trying to prove they did not.
