What to know about little kids
Little kid's sizing covers roughly 4 through 7, listed as boys 4-7 and girls 4-6X. The 6X is an extra step sitting just above a 6 and just under a 7. Diaper allowance disappears here and real garment construction arrives: fly fronts, buttons, back pockets, separate waistbands and zips. Clothes in this band are small versions of adult clothes rather than baby clothes made bigger.
Height drives the chart across this stretch. Children gain about 2 to 2.5 inches a year between four and seven, and legs lengthen faster than waists thicken, so the two measurements stop moving together. Adjustable inner waistbands, meaning a strip of elastic with buttonholes hidden inside the waistband, are the detail that keeps a pair of pants wearable through that gap. Without one, pants bought long enough to last sit loose at the waist and slide.
