What to know about toddler
Toddler sizing runs 2T through 5T, and the T marks a shape rather than an age. Pants in this band are cut full through the seat with a high rise. That lets the waistband clear a diaper or a pull up. Tops allow for a round tummy, and almost everything pulls on: elastic waists, wide neck openings, snaps or a single front zip. The design assumes a person who is walking, climbing and being dressed by someone else, usually in a hurry.
Overlap with numbered sizes causes most of the confusion here. A 4T and a children's 4 aim at the same height, roughly 39 to 41 inches. The 4T is wider through the hip and shorter in the leg, while the 4 is slimmer and longer. A slim child who is out of diapers looks swamped in the T cut. One still in diapers gets a waistband that will not close in a plain 4. Judge the body, not the number.
Two practical notes close the band. Pajamas here fall squarely under the US rule. Sleepwear above size 9 months and up to size 14 must either fit snugly or be flame resistant. That is why toddler pajamas hug the body and look undersized on the hanger. Potty training also rewards clothes a child can manage alone. So elastic beats buttons and a back zip is a mistake even when the garment fits beautifully.
