Three-Quarter Sleeve

Covers the elbow and stops short of the wrist on the forearm.

Also called: 3/4 sleeve, bracelet sleeve

The basics

What to know about three-quarter sleeve

A three-quarter sleeve ends on the forearm, past the elbow but short of the wrist. Its dressier name, the bracelet sleeve, points at the reason people choose it. The wrist and whatever sits on it stay in view. The proportion is a fixed design choice, not a long sleeve pushed up.

Baring the wrist does more than show a watch. The wrist and ankle are the two thinnest points on the limbs, so ending fabric there slims the whole silhouette by implication. That is why the length reads polished on knits and jackets that would look heavier full-sleeved. Practicality stacks on top. The hem stays clear of sinks, keyboards and dinner plates without rolling. Meanwhile the elbow stays covered and warm, which a pushed-up sleeve never keeps.

Weather sets the limits at both ends. In real cold the bare forearm gap between glove and sleeve is exactly where wind gets in. Strong sun leaves the forearm taking exposure the length cannot cover. This is a spring, fall and indoor length more than a January or July one. Cut matters too. On long arms a labeled three-quarter can arrive near the wrist and read like a shrunken long sleeve. Judge where it actually lands, not what the tag calls it.

Best for

When it works well

  • Watch and bracelet wearers get a length designed around the bare wrist.
  • Desk and sink work stays clean, since the hem sits clear without rolling or soaking.
  • Knits and jackets read lighter, as ending at the forearm slims the whole line.
  • Office dressing gains a tailored look with less warmth than full sleeves carry.
