Dress Length

Length is named by where the hem lands on your leg, not by inches on a tag. The same dress stops at the knee on one wearer and mid-calf on another. The five bands below are how listings translate that landing point into a word.

Hem position moves formality more than any other single change. Hold the silhouette and fabric constant and the same dress reads casual above the knee, professional at it, fashion-led on the calf and ceremonial at the floor. Shoes shift with it: the shorter the hem, the more the shoe shows and the more it matters.

Set the bands against your own proportions. Hems flatter where the leg narrows, at the knee and the ankle taper, and thicken the line where the leg is widest, at mid-thigh and mid-calf. The question in the fitting room is never the named length. It is where that named length actually stops on you, standing straight in the shoes you plan to wear.
