A cardigan opens all the way down the front instead of pulling over the head, closed with buttons, snaps or a simple tie. That front opening is the entire point on a newborn, whose neck cannot yet support the pushing and pulling that a pullover sweater or a bodysuit demands.

Yarn choice decides both the warmth and the care. Acrylic is machine washable, low cost and holds its shape, though it traps less warmth than a natural fiber of the same thickness. Cotton knits breathe well and suit a mild room, but stretch out of shape faster than a blend. Wool and wool blends trap the most warmth for the least weight, which matters on a baby who loses heat quickly, though many need a hand wash and some infants react to wool worn directly against skin, so a thin cotton layer underneath solves that without giving up the warmth on top.

Closures are worth real attention on anything a baby wears. Large decorative buttons, and any button attached with a shank that can work loose under tugging and mouthing, are a choking risk, so a cardigan meant for daily wear is safer with snaps hidden under a flap or with buttons sewn flat and reinforced from behind. Bows, ribbon ties and appliques carry the same risk when they sit loose rather than stitched flat, and the same logic that keeps drawstrings off a hood applies here: nothing loose enough to be pulled free belongs on a baby garment.

Against a bodysuit or a footed one-piece, a cardigan is a layer added on top rather than a base garment, and it is the easiest of any top layer to add without disturbing a sleeping or freshly settled baby. Against a baby gown, which also avoids a pull-over closure, a cardigan is worn awake and over other clothes rather than as the garment itself. It suits cool rooms, car rides, stroller walks and the gap between an indoor and outdoor temperature, where a full snowsuit is too much and a bodysuit alone is not enough.

Check every button by pulling firmly for a few seconds, the same test worth running on any baby garment, and favor snaps or flat sewn buttons for anything worn often. A cardigan is a daytime layer rather than a crib item, since loose knit does not belong with a sleeping baby under 12 months and should come off before sleep rather than staying on over sleepwear. Wash wool by hand or on a wool cycle to keep the fiber from felting into a smaller, stiffer version of itself, and store cardigans folded, since a hanger stretches a knit shoulder out of shape within a season. The honest weakness is the very thing that makes it useful: an open front gives less wind resistance than a garment with no gap at all, so a cardigan suits mild cold rather than real weather.
