Kid's Crew Socks

Reaching mid calf, a crew sock puts four to six inches of knitted leg above the shoe on a school-age child. Coverage is the point rather than warmth alone, since that shaft protects skin from whatever the shoe or the sport presses against it.

The leg is usually ribbed, meaning knitted in alternating raised and sunken columns. This lets it stretch around a calf and hold on without a tight band. Stretch the ribbed leg to twice its width and release it, rejecting anything that stays wide. Turn the sock inside out and confirm a flat toe seam and a shaped heel pocket rather than a straight tube. Buy so the shoe size lands mid-range on the packet. Wash inside out in a mesh bag to clear sole lint, dry on low, and buy six identical pairs so one lost sock never ends a pair.
