Kid's T-Shirt Dress

A T-shirt dress is exactly what it sounds like: a T-shirt lengthened past the hip to the knee, using the same crew neck, the same set-in or drop shoulder sleeve, and the same straight body as the tee already in a child's drawer. There is no waist seam and no added fullness at the hem, so it hangs the way an oversized tee would if nobody grew into it.

Cotton jersey is the fabric almost every version uses, at a weight close to a heavyweight tee, around 5.5 to 6.5 ounces per square yard, heavier than a play dress often runs since there is no separate skirt panel adding its own drape. Because the body is cut straight rather than flared, the dress relies entirely on the stretch of the jersey to move with a child, and that stretch is exactly what a rib crew neckline gives up first. The neckline gets pulled over the head, tugged straight and grabbed by small hands hundreds of times, and a single layer rib eventually stops springing back and hangs slightly open even at rest.

Against a play dress, the difference is the cut rather than the fabric. A play dress is built as an A-line with real flare from the chest down, made for the skirt to swing and twirl. A T-shirt dress keeps the narrower, straighter shape of the shirt it is named for, so it moves with the body instead of away from it. Against a sundress, it trades woven cotton and airflow for knit stretch and a softer hand. Against a sweater dress, it is a fraction of the weight and works in warm weather instead of cold.

Any child who wants to run, climb and sit on the floor without thinking about a dress at all is well served here, since nothing about the cut restricts movement the way a fuller skirt or a lined bodice can. It is also the easiest dress in the category for a child to pull on alone. Skip it for anything that calls for a dressier line, since a straight jersey body reads as casual in every setting, and skip a thin single jersey for a child who is rough on clothes, since it shows a stretched neckline sooner than a heavier knit does.

Stretch the neckline wide with both hands and let go, the same check that matters on a plain tee, and pass on anything that comes back with a visible wave in the edge. A double layer knit, often called interlock, holds its shape at the neck far longer than a single layer folded over and stitched down. Wash cold and dry on low, since heat is what pulls the recovery out of rib knit fastest, and fold rather than hang it, since a hanger drags the shoulders wide the same way it does on a tee. The honest weakness is the neckline: it is the one part of the garment doing structural work in a dress with no waist and no lining to fall back on, and once it goes, the whole dress reads as worn out even if the body underneath is fine.
