Kid's Long Sleeve Tee (Tops)

A long sleeve tee is a T-shirt with the sleeve run out to the wrist instead of stopping above the elbow. Everything else about it stays the same: a crew or ribbed neckline, a single layer of cotton jersey, one seam down each side. It exists to cover the gap between a hot-weather tee and a cold-weather hoodie, adding warmth to the arms without adding a second layer across the chest.

Weight sits close to a standard tee, usually around 5 to 6 ounces per square yard, light enough to breathe once a child is running around indoors. The cuff is the part doing the real work. A ribbed cuff, knitted separately and sewn on, keeps its grip through a season of being pushed up to the elbow and pulled back down. A cuff that is just hemmed jersey, folded over and stitched flat, stretches out within weeks and stops gripping the wrist at all. On most children, arm length outgrows a size before body length does, so the cuff climbs the forearm a full size before the hem stops covering the waist.

Against a short sleeve tee, the difference is coverage rather than construction, and a long sleeve tee runs warmer by roughly one layer for the same fabric weight. A hoodie adds a brushed fleece backing and a hood on top of that, real insulation a long sleeve tee cannot match. A button-up shirt swaps the stretch knit for woven cloth that holds a crease, at the cost of the pull-on ease a tee gives a child dressing alone. A long sleeve tee sits between the two: warmer than one, lighter than the other, and still simple enough for a young child to manage without help.

Cool mornings that warm up by afternoon are the exact case for it, along with sun-exposed play, where covered arms beat sunscreen reapplied every couple of hours, and school days where a light layer under a jumper does the work of a jacket. Full winter cold is where it falls short, since a single layer of jersey blocks little wind on its own. If your child runs hot, a short sleeve tee with a layer to add works better than a long sleeve they end up pushing to the elbow by mid-morning anyway.

Stretch the cuff around two fingers and let go, the same check you would run on a plain tee's neckline. It should snap back flat rather than sitting loose, since a cuff that has already lost its grip in the store will be at the elbow within a week. Buy a size with extra room in the sleeve rather than extra room in the body, since length in the wrong place solves nothing here. Wash cold and dry on low, since heat is what pulls the recovery out of a ribbed cuff fastest. The honest tradeoff is that the sleeve always gives out first, so expect to retire a long sleeve tee for a riding cuff and a bare wrist well before the body itself wears thin.
