Kid's Chinos (Bottoms)

Chinos are trousers cut from cotton twill, a tight diagonal weave that runs smoother and lighter than denim and takes a crease well. They sit between play clothes and formal trousers: too tidy for the playground, too relaxed for a dress code that calls for a full suit.

Twill weight for children's chinos usually runs lighter than denim, around 6 to 8 ounces per square yard, enough to hold a crease and resist a light scuff without adding the bulk of jeans. Most pairs use the same adjustable inner waistband found in kid's jeans, a length of buttonhole tape hidden behind the front panel and reached through a slot, which takes a couple of inches out of the waist without touching the leg length. Some school-focused pairs add a second layer of fabric at the knee, sewn in behind the front panel, because a seated child kneels and scuffs that exact spot more than any other.

Next to jeans, chinos trade denim's heavier hand and topstitching for a plainer, dressier line that a uniform policy is more likely to allow. Next to joggers, they give up the elastic waist and tapered cuff for a flat front and a real hem, so they take longer to put on and look far less like sportswear. Cargo pants share the twill but add bulk at the thigh that a chino leaves out on purpose, keeping the leg slim for a tidier line.

School uniforms that call for tailored trousers rather than sweatpants, family occasions that fall short of full formal wear, and any day your child needs to look put together without a woven dress shirt are where chinos earn a place. Skip them for rough outdoor play and gym class, since twill scuffs and creases in a way that knit shrugs off. A child who resists a fitted waistband is also better served by joggers, since a chino has far less give than any elastic pant.

Work the inner waistband slot with two fingers before buying. It should move in clear notches, not slide loosely, since a notch that has already gone slack in the store will do the same on the first day of school. Check for reinforced fabric at the knee if the pair is meant for daily wear rather than occasions only, and look for a flat felled seam down the inside leg, where the raw edges are folded in and stitched twice, since that seam takes the most strain when a child climbs stairs two at a time. Wash cold and dry on low so the crease-holding finish lasts, and expect the knee to be the first place that wears through, however careful the waistband is.
