A projector throws light at a surface you supply, so one box makes a 90 inch picture or a 150 inch one depending on where you stand it. Throw ratio prices that freedom: lens distance divided by image width. Multiply the ratio by the width you want and you have the distance you need. A 100 inch 16:9 image is 87 inches wide, so a 1.5:1 lens sits 11 feet back, a 0.5:1 lens under 4 feet, and a 0.25:1 lens close enough to hide in a cabinet below it. Diagonal is quoted like a television, but distance decides what you can buy.
Light source and imaging chip
Two parts inside settle most of the argument. The light source makes the light: a mercury lamp, labeled UHP, is cheap and fades to half its output across a rated 3,000 to 5,000 hours, wanting a fresh bulb every two to four years. A laser engine, usually one blue laser fired at a spinning phosphor wheel, holds output for 20,000 to 30,000 hours and cannot be re-lamped when it goes. The imager shapes it into pixels. Millions of tilting mirrors on one sealed chip, sold as DLP, keep dust out and edges crisp. Three liquid crystal panels, labeled 3LCD, make color as bright as white but leave the light path open to dust. A liquid crystal mirror, called LCoS, gives the deepest native black at the highest price and weight.
Ask for ANSI lumens
Brightness is where numbers get slippery. Ask for ANSI lumens, a standard measured at nine points across the screen, because LED lumens and peak lumens read two to three times higher for the same picture. How many you need is a room question, since a projector cannot make black. Black is where it sends no light, so black is whatever the room paints onto the screen, and one table lamp flattens the image. A dark room needs 500 to 1,500 ANSI lumens for a 100 inch screen; a living room with the blinds down wants 2,000 to 3,000. In daylight you are only choosing how much you lose. Resolution hides a similar trick: supported resolution names the signals accepted, native resolution counts pixels on the chip, and many sets sold as 4K flash a 1080p chip four times a frame, shifting half a pixel to land 8.3 million pixels on the wall.
Let the room pick

What a big picture costs
You pay for the big picture in light, space, noise or money. Contrast comes first: the brighter the room, the grayer the black. Ultra short throw buys the wall and charges you geometry, since a lens at that angle magnifies every bow in the plaster. Digital keystone correction squares a tilted image by discarding pixels, costing 10 to 20 percent of your resolution and blurring small text. That means optical lens shift, moving the lens instead of the image, deserves the extra money. Fan noise is the cost no shop demonstrates: 22 to 26 dB vanishes under a soundtrack, 32 dB and above sits inside every quiet scene, and eco mode trades a third of your brightness for that quiet.
The figures the box buries
Judge a candidate on figures the box buries. Native contrast, measured with the dynamic iris and laser dimming switched off, decides whether a night scene looks like night: 1,500:1 is ordinary and a good LCoS engine reaches 20,000:1, while a dynamic figure quoting a million to one describes a shutter closing. Set the color brightness number, sometimes printed as color light output, beside the white one; when color reads a third of white, whites glare and faces turn gray. Check lens shift travel, given as a percentage of image height, because it decides whether you can mount where the joist actually is. Airflow and filters
Keeping one alive is mostly airflow and filters. Leave 12 inches clear at the exhaust; a projector rebreathing its own hot air throttles and shuts down. Wash or replace the air filter on its stated schedule, often every 500 hours and as little as 100 in a dusty room, because a blocked filter is why most projectors die young. Let the cooling cycle finish before pulling the plug; cutting power to a hot lamp shortens its life sharply. Above roughly 5,000 feet, turn on high altitude mode so the fan compensates for thin air. Plan on 7 to 10 years from a lamp model with bulbs replaced along the way, and 10 to 15 from a laser one.

Solve the throw distance before you shortlist anything. Measure from the screen wall to the only place the projector can sit, then divide by the image width you want, both in inches. A 100 inch 16:9 screen is 87 inches wide. So a shelf 12 feet back needs a throw ratio near 1.65 and a cabinet 3 feet out needs 0.4.
Read the placement chart rather than assuming the lens points at the middle of the screen. Most home projectors throw the whole image above the lens centerline, which is why a ceiling mount hangs upside down. Lens shift is quoted as a percentage of image height, and plus or minus 60 percent on a 49 inch tall image buys you 29 inches of freedom in where you mount it.
Set seating between 1.2 and 1.6 times the image width. With a 100 inch screen that puts the front row 8.7 feet back and the last row 11.6 feet back. Closer than that and a 4K image starts showing its pixel structure on faces. Further and you have bought a screen you did not need.
Keep the bottom of the screen 24 to 36 inches off the floor so heads do not clip the picture. A 100 inch screen stands 49 inches tall, so its top edge lands between 73 and 85 inches and needs a clear wall of at least 7 feet 6 inches with nothing on it.
Plan power and signal before you drill. Copper HDMI gets unreliable past about 25 feet at 18 Gbps, so use an active optical cable and plug its marked source end into the player. Adding a new outlet at the ceiling is licensed electrical work in most countries and the rules vary, so check local code and pay an electrician instead of running an extension lead across the ceiling.
For ultra short throw, measure the cabinet and the wall. Most need a stand 16 to 24 inches deep placed 4 to 18 inches out. The wall must be flat within a few millimeters across the screen area, because a lens working at that angle turns a slight bow into a visibly bent edge.

Caring for projectors
Clean or swap the air filter on the interval the manual states, often every 500 hours and as often as every 100 in a dusty or carpeted room. A blocked filter starves the cooling path, and overheating is what kills most projectors long before their light source runs out.
Let the fan finish its cool down cycle before you cut power, and never put the projector on a switched strip you flip off at the wall. Yanking power from a hot mercury lamp shortens its life sharply and occasionally cracks the envelope.
Blow dust off the lens with a rubber bulb blower first, then use lens tissue with a drop of lens fluid if a mark remains. A dry cloth, a paper towel or a shirt sleeve grinds grit across a coated glass surface, and the fine scratches show up as haze around bright objects.
Expect a mercury lamp to lose 25 to 30 percent of its output in its first 500 to 1,000 hours, so reset your brightness settings after that and replace the bulb at the rated hours rather than waiting for it to fail. Running eco mode roughly doubles lamp life and drops fan noise several decibels.
Dust the screen with a soft dry brush or a clean microfiber cloth, working outward from the middle. Ambient light rejecting surfaces carry a molded optical layer that scratches easily, and a crease or a pressure mark in a tensioned screen never comes out.
Install firmware when it fixes something, then check your picture mode, geometry and lens memory afterward. Updates often repair HDMI handshake failures and HDR tone mapping, and they just as often wipe the alignment you spent an evening setting.

How many lumens do I actually need?
For a 100 inch screen in a fully dark room, 500 to 1,500 ANSI lumens is plenty and more than that just hurts black level. A living room at night with blinds closed wants 2,000 to 3,000. Add roughly 40 percent for a 130 inch screen, since the same light spreads over more area. Treat any figure not labeled ANSI as marketing.
How far back does a projector sit for a 120 inch screen?
A 120 inch 16:9 image is 104.6 inches wide, so multiply that by the throw ratio. A 1.2:1 lens sits 10.5 feet back, a 1.5:1 lens 13 feet, a 0.5:1 short throw 4.4 feet, and a 0.25:1 ultra short throw about 26 inches from the screen. Zoom lenses give a range, so check both ends.
Can I just project onto a white wall?
You can, and you will lose maybe 15 to 25 percent of the picture quality. Paint is rarely neutral white, roller texture scatters light, and no wall is as flat as it looks. A plain matte white screen with a gain of 1.0 costs little and fixes all three. Save the ambient light rejecting screen for a room you cannot darken.
Is a laser projector worth the extra over a lamp model?
Depends on your hours. Watching two hours a night is 730 hours a year, so a 4,000 hour lamp lasts about five years and one replacement bulb costs a fair slice of the price gap. Laser wins clearly if you watch daily, if the unit is ceiling mounted somewhere awkward, or if you want brightness that stays put.
Is an ultra short throw projector as good as a large television?
Not on picture. A television is several times brighter, holds its black in a lit room and needs no alignment. Ultra short throw wins on size per dollar above roughly 100 inches, and it wins on getting into an apartment where a 100 inch panel will not fit through the stairwell. Below 85 inches, buy the television.
What does 4K mean on a projector?
Often not a 4K chip. Many models flash a 1080p imager four times per frame, or a 2716 by 1528 imager twice, nudging the image half a pixel each time so 8.3 million pixels reach the screen. It really looks sharper than 1080p. Native 4K imagers exist, cost several times more, and are worth asking about by name.
Why does my picture look washed out and gray?
Ambient light, nearly always. Any light landing on the screen raises black level, and black is the half of contrast a projector cannot fight. Check three things: close everything that lets light in, turn off the vivid or dynamic preset, and switch HDR off if the projector cannot hold 600 nits equivalent on your screen size.
How loud are projectors and where should one go?
Quiet models measure 22 to 26 dB in eco mode and 28 to 34 dB at full output, which is audible in a silent scene.
