The basics

What to know about Laser Projector

Laser describes what makes the light, not where the projector sits, so the label crosses every other style here. The common design fires one blue laser at a spinning phosphor wheel to produce white light, then splits it into color. The premium design uses three separate red, green and blue lasers and skips the phosphor entirely. Both are rated at 20,000 to 30,000 hours before output falls to half, which works out to 15 to 20 years at four hours a night.

Set against a lamp based Home Theater Projector or Business Projector, the practical differences show up daily. There is no two minute warm up and no cool down wait, brightness holds steady instead of fading a third away in the first thousand hours. The light output can be dimmed in fine steps to deepen black in dark scenes. A three laser engine covers the wide color space used for cinema releases where a lamp usually manages 75 to 90 percent of it. Nearly every Ultra Short Throw Projector uses a laser engine.

It earns its price with hours. Daily viewing, a ceiling mount that means a ladder and a dust sheet every lamp change, or a room where you want the same brightness in year six as in year one all point this way. It makes less sense for a projector used a dozen evenings a year, where a lamp model at half the price will outlive your interest in it. Bear in mind the engine is sealed: when a laser finally dims, there is no part to replace and the projector is finished.

Read the rated hours carefully, because the figure is measured to half brightness rather than to failure, and some specifications quote it in eco mode only. On a three laser model, look at a bright flat field such as a snow scene or a plain sky and check for speckle, a faint shimmering granularity some viewers find distracting and others never notice. Confirm whether laser dimming can be switched off, since its contrast trick can also cause visible brightness pumping in scenes that cut between dark and bright.

Nothing here needs re-lamping, but everything here needs cooling. Keep the filter clean and the exhaust clear, because heat is now the only thing standing between you and the end of the projector's life. Let the cool down cycle finish anyway; the drive electronics and the phosphor wheel bearing both prefer it. Expect 10 to 15 years of ordinary use, and expect the video processing and HDMI ports to feel dated before the light does.
