Try every supplied ear tip, and try different sizes in each ear, since your two canals are rarely the same. Press a bud gently inward while music plays: if the bass swells under pressure, the seal is leaking and you need the next size up.
For over ear models, measure your ear from the top of the helix to the bottom of the lobe, usually 60 to 65 mm, and across, usually 30 to 35 mm. The pad opening should clear both by about 5 mm, or the rim will rest on cartilage all day.
Test clamp by nodding fast and shaking your head. The cups should not shift, and you should still slide one finger between the pad and your cheekbone. Tighter than that produces a dull ache above the ears within two hours.
Weigh the headband against your neck. At 250 g or less, an over ear set disappears for a full day. Above 350 g most people feel crown pressure inside two hours and start adjusting them constantly.
Wear your glasses during the trial. A temple arm lifts the pad and opens a gap that costs 6 to 10 dB of bass, which changes the whole balance and no equalizer setting fixes it properly.
For anything worn during exercise, jump, bend forward and turn your head sharply while wearing them. A stated IPX4 rating covers sweat and rain from any direction, and it does not cover swimming, showering or salt water.

Caring for headphones & earbuds
Brush the mesh over each earbud nozzle weekly with a dry soft brush. Packed earwax is the most common reason a single earbud goes quiet, and people replace working headphones over it.
Replace ear pads at 12 to 18 months of regular use. Compressed foam sits the driver closer to your ear and thins the bass. The change creeps in slowly enough that you blame the headphones instead.

Does noise canceling actually make a plane quiet?
It removes the drone, not the conversation. Cancellation generates an inverted wave, which is easy for long low frequency sound and hard for short high frequency sound, so expect 20 to 40 dB off engine rumble and very little off announcements or a crying child. The cabin becomes far less tiring rather than silent, and the physical seal still supplies much of the effect.
Are wired headphones finished?
