Measure the shelf before you choose the console. Most home consoles run about 12 to 16 inches long and 4 to 6 inches thick lying flat. They need 4 inches of clear air at both intake and exhaust, so a 15 inch deep cabinet behind a closed glass door is the wrong home for one.
Check your television's ports rather than its size. Find which inputs carry 4K at 120 Hz, since many sets fit that to two inputs out of four, and confirm the panel refreshes at 120 Hz natively. On a 1080p 60 Hz set, buy the cheaper machine and put the difference into games.
Do the storage math before you compare prices. One terabyte leaves roughly 800 GB once system files take their share, and installed games run 50 to 150 GB. That is six to ten titles at a time. Decide now whether the machine expands by internal M.2 drive, proprietary card or microSD, then price that part.
Time a download on your own connection. A 100 GB game needs about 4.5 hours on a 50 Mbps line and 2.2 hours at 100 Mbps. If your service caps data near 1 TB a month, eight large games plus their patches will reach the ceiling on their own.
Hold a handheld for ten minutes with the grip or case you intend to use. Dedicated portables sit near 275 to 400 g, hybrids land around 400 to 550 g with controllers attached, and handheld gaming PCs reach 600 to 700 g. This is the weight your wrists start reporting on a 40 minute train ride.
Plan the power run. Under load a home console draws 150 to 200 W from an ordinary wall outlet and needs no new circuit. But its cable is usually about 1.5 m, so measure from the shelf to the socket and add a surge protector instead of a coiled extension reel.

Clear the vents every 12 to 18 months with short bursts of canned air from the outside only. Dust raises internal temperature, and sustained heat is what kills the power supply and the drive long before anything else wears out.
Hold 10 percent of the drive free at all times. Patches frequently need working space equal to the file they are replacing. So a console with 20 GB left will refuse a 30 GB update and lock you out of the game entirely.
Switch on cloud saves, or copy saves to a USB stick once a month. A save file is the one thing a console cannot rebuild for you. A drive that dies takes a hundred hours of progress with it.
Treat analog stick drift as wear, not damage. Isopropyl alcohol around the stick base clears grit, but a worn sensor keeps drifting; controllers using hall effect sensors avoid it because nothing physically rubs. Budget for a replacement pad after one to two years of daily play.
Set standby so it stops drawing power once downloads finish. Networked standby that keeps charging a controller and pulling updates can sit at a few watts up to about 15 W around the clock, against under 1 W when fully off.
Reopen the video settings after every major system update. Firmware releases reset resolution, HDR and 120 Hz output more often than you would expect. A console quietly running 4K at 60 looks perfectly fine until you compare it.
