What to know about televisions

Three products in one cabinet

A television is three products bolted into one cabinet: a display panel that makes the picture, a bank of ports that everything else plugs into, and a software platform that runs the apps and takes security updates. Screen size is quoted as the diagonal. So a 65 inch set measures about 57 inches wide and 32 inches tall, and a 75 inch set about 65 inches wide. Resolution names the pixel grid, and 4K, also sold as UHD, means 3840 by 2160 pixels. It is on essentially everything above 43 inches now. Those numbers say nothing about how bright the picture gets, how dark it can go, or how long the apps keep working. That is what you actually live with.

OLED or backlit LED

Two construction methods sit under every marketing label. An OLED panel makes light at each pixel and can switch a pixel completely off. Its black is true black, because nothing behind the image is glowing. Everything else is an LCD panel, a liquid crystal shutter layer with a separate light source behind it, and that backlight never fully switches off. Local dimming divides the backlight into zones that darken with the picture, so 32 zones smear a glow around a subtitle line while 500 or more keep it tight. Mini-LED describes a backlight built from far smaller diodes, which is how zone counts climb; it refines the lighting rather than replacing the panel. Quantum dots, sold as QLED, form a color conversion layer that holds saturation at high brightness. They also sit in front of a backlight. Brightness is measured in nits, roughly the light leaving a square meter of screen. Budget sets peak near 250 to 350 nits, a set that handles high dynamic range convincingly reaches 700 or more on highlights, and the strongest mini-LED sets pass 2000.

Pick by the room, not the badge

Pick by the room rather than by the badge. Windows on two walls and daytime viewing call for brightness and a coating that scatters reflections, which points at a Mini-LED LCD or a Quantum-Dot LCD. A basement or any room you can darken rewards an OLED TV, since the gap between good black and true black only shows once the lamps are off. Bedroom and kitchen sets at 43 to 50 inches have little reason to be anything but a plain LED-LCD TV, because that panel spends its life showing news at half brightness. Console players need 120 Hz and enough port bandwidth to feed it. Where the screen has to disappear into a decorated room, an Art-Style TV answers a furniture problem, not a picture one.

What each panel gives up

Every gain is paid for somewhere. OLED buys black and off-angle color and gives back full-screen brightness. A snowfield or a hockey rink can sit near 150 to 300 nits across the whole panel while a strong mini-LED set holds several times that, and static logos, scoreboards and desktop taskbars carry a real if much reduced burn-in risk across years of the same pixels. Mini-LED buys output and gives back a faint halo around bright objects on black. Naming has its own drawback. A port marked HDMI 2.1 may carry as little as the older 18 Gbps of bandwidth, so ask for the number and the named features, 4K at 120 Hz, VRR (variable refresh rate, which matches the screen to the console frame rate) and ALLM (auto low latency mode), instead of trusting the version. Very cheap sets are cheap partly because the platform sells advertising and reports what you watch, a cost that arrives after the box is open.

Six checks before you buy

Six checks separate a good set from a badly chosen one. Count how many HDMI inputs run at full bandwidth, since many sets give two out of four and one of those is usually the eARC port your sound system takes. Native refresh must be 120 Hz for smooth console play, because figures like motion rate 240 describe processing and not panel speed. Stand 40 degrees off center and watch the color: a VA type LCD loses contrast fast from there. In contrast, an IPS type holds color but starts from weaker black. Play a dark scene with white subtitles and look for a glow trailing the text. Input lag in game mode should come in under about 15 ms. Ask how many years of software updates the maker commits to, because the panel will outlast the apps.

Give it room to breathe

Give the cabinet roughly 4 inches of clear air behind and above, since heat kills the power supply long before the panel wears out. Clean with a dry microfiber cloth and nothing more; cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol strip the anti-reflection coating and leave cloudy patches that never come back out. Move the set off the shop preset, named Vivid or Dynamic, into Filmmaker or Cinema mode, which usually cuts brightness and power draw by about a third and stops the processing that makes film look like video. On an OLED, leave the set in standby after viewing so its pixel compensation routine can run rather than cutting power at a switched socket. Plan on 7 to 10 years of heavy use before a dimming backlight or a failed power board ends it.

Fit & sizing

  • Measure from your seat to the screen wall in inches, then divide by 2.5 for a relaxed picture and by 1.6 for a cinema-like one. At 9 feet, which is 108 inches, that gives a range of 43 to 67 inches, and 65 is where most living rooms land.
  • Check width without the stand and foot spread as two separate figures. A 65 inch set is about 57 inches wide with feet set near the outer corners. It needs a surface at least 58 inches across and 12 inches deep. A 55 inch console will not hold it however solid it looks.
  • Put the center of the screen at seated eye height, roughly 40 to 42 inches off the floor for a normal sofa. A 65 inch panel is 32 inches tall, so its bottom edge sits near 25 inches. Mounting above a fireplace usually pushes the center past 55 inches, and your neck reports that within an hour.
  • Read the VESA pattern, the spacing in millimeters between the four threaded holes on the back, before buying a mount. Sets around 65 inches often use 400 by 400 mm and weigh 45 to 60 pounds without feet. Fix into studs or solid masonry, never plasterboard alone, and choose a mount rated for at least double the weight.
  • Measure the route in, not only the room. A boxed 75 inch set runs roughly 72 by 45 by 9 inches, which will not turn on a tight staircase landing. It has to travel upright with two people carrying it.
  • Count your sources against usable inputs first. A console, a streaming stick, a disc player and a sound system is four connections into a set that may offer three full-bandwidth ports, one of which the sound system claims for eARC.

Care

Caring for televisions

  • Wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth, and if a mark needs more, dampen the cloth with plain water away from the set. Ammonia and alcohol dissolve the anti-reflection layer, and the cloudy haze they leave is permanent.
  • Leave at least 4 inches of clear space behind and above the cabinet and never box it into a tight alcove. Heat-aged capacitors in the power supply are the most common reason a perfectly good panel gets scrapped.
  • Switch off the demo picture preset on day one. Vivid and Dynamic drive the panel near maximum, where a 65 inch set can pull 150 W or more against roughly 90 W in Filmmaker mode. This is real money across 5 hours a night.
  • Install firmware updates, then go straight back into picture mode, audio output and privacy settings. Major platform updates frequently restore their own defaults and undo everything you set.
  • Look for automatic content recognition in the privacy menu and turn it off if you do not want the set reporting what is on screen. It is usually buried, worded as viewing information or similar, and switched on by default.
  • On an OLED, vary what plays and hide fixed interface elements where you can. One bright static logo or taskbar sitting in the same spot for hours a day, every day, is the only realistic way home viewing produces visible uneven pixel wear.

Common questions

What size TV should I buy?
Measure the distance from your seat to the screen. At 8 feet, buy 55 to 65 inches; at 9 feet, 65 to 75; at 11 feet, 75 or larger. Almost everyone errs small, because a shop floor makes every screen look enormous. The caveat is your source: a 75 inch screen at 8 feet exposes every flaw in a low-bitrate cable channel.
Is 8K worth buying yet?
No, for two reasons. Almost nothing is filmed, streamed or broadcast in 8K, so the set spends its life upscaling 4K and HD. Sitting 9 feet from a 65 inch screen, most people already cannot resolve the 4K pixel grid, never mind four times more pixels. Put the same money into brightness, local dimming and sound.
Do I actually need HDMI 2.1?
Only if you own a console or gaming PC that outputs 4K at 120 Hz. Streaming, broadcast and disc content tops out at 4K and 60 frames per second, which the older standard carries fine. If you do need it, check the bandwidth figure, 40 or 48 Gbps, and count how many ports have it, since sets often fit it to two inputs out of four.
Can OLED TVs really get burn-in?
Yes, though the risk is far smaller than forum stories suggest. Uneven pixel wear needs the same bright static element in the same place for hours a day over months: a shopping channel logo, a scoreboard, a desktop taskbar. Mixed viewing with the compensation cycles allowed to run rarely produces it. Use the set as a computer monitor and you are in the risk zone.
What does a television cost to run?
A 65 inch set draws roughly 90 to 150 W depending on picture mode and content. So 5 hours a night comes to about 165 to 275 kWh a year. What that costs varies enormously by country and tariff, so multiply by your own rate per kWh rather than believing a figure printed on a box. Standby is usually under 0.5 W.
Why does everything look like a cheap video recording?
Motion interpolation is switched on. The set invents frames between the real ones to smooth movement, which flatters sport and ruins film, because 24 frames per second is part of how cinema looks. Find it under names like motion smoothing, clear motion or true motion and turn it off, or keep it low for sport only. Filmmaker mode disables it for you.
Do I need a soundbar as well?
Almost certainly. A panel 1 to 2 inches deep has no cabinet volume for a real driver, so dialogue thins and bass is simply absent. Even a compact bar is an obvious step up, and a bar with a separate subwoofer is the change most people notice most. Budget for sound at the same time, not a year later.
How long should a television last?
Panels are rated at 50,000 to 100,000 hours to half brightness. This is 20 years at 7 hours a day, but sets rarely die that way. Power supplies and backlight drivers fail first, usually somewhere between 7 and 10 years, and the app platform slows and loses services before that. A cheap streaming stick refreshes the software side without replacing the screen.
