Measure the space before you shortlist any machine. A mid tower wants about 45 by 21 by 45 cm plus 10 cm behind it for cables and exhaust, a small form factor case needs 10 to 20 liters, and a mini PC disappears onto a 100 by 100 mm mounting plate behind the screen.
Read two clearance numbers on any case you like: maximum graphics card length, because large cards measure 300 to 360 mm, and maximum cooler height, because tower air coolers stand 150 to 170 mm while compact cases stop near 60 mm.
Size the power supply by arithmetic rather than by badge. Add the peak watts of the processor and the graphics card, add 150 watts for board, drives and fans, then buy 20 to 30 percent above that figure so the unit is not running flat out.
A complete desktop and monitor draw 500 to 750 watts at peak, which sits comfortably inside a normal wall circuit, so no electrical work is involved. Give it a socket of its own instead of sharing an extension lead with a heater, a kettle or a laser printer, whose warm up surges trip shared protection.
Decide where the ports need to be while you are sitting at the desk. A tower on the floor puts the front USB and headphone sockets about 60 cm below the desktop, the regret buyers report most often, and a front panel extension cable or a desk side mount solves it for very little.
