What to know about laptops

Everything folded into one shell

A laptop folds a screen, a keyboard, a pointing surface, a battery and a cooling system into one hinged case, and that folding is the whole story. On a desktop you swap parts as needs change. On a laptop nearly everything is decided the day you pay. Screens run from about 13 to 18 inches measured corner to corner, and weight from roughly 1.0 kg to 3.0 kg (2.2 to 6.6 lb). The gap between those numbers is not luxury. It is cooling, battery and ports. Memory is often soldered, meaning fused flat to the mainboard and impossible to replace. The 16 GB you pick at checkout is the 16 GB you still have in year five.

Speed comes from a power budget

Speed comes from a power budget, not from a chip name. The processor and its built-in graphics share a wattage ceiling the case sets: roughly 15 to 28 watts in a slim body, 45 to 55 watts in a thicker one, and the same chip family runs 30 to 50 percent faster in the machine that can carry the heat away. Heat pipes, copper fins and one or two fans do that carrying. When they fall behind, the chip throttles, meaning it slows itself deliberately to stay under a temperature limit. So a laptop can feel quick for the first ten minutes of a video export and ordinary for the next fifty. A separate graphics chip, called discrete because it has its own memory and its own power draw, adds real speed for games and rendering, plus 40 to 150 watts of heat that has to leave the case somehow.

Match the family to the heaviest thing you do in a normal week, not to the one thing you might do in a year. It comes out of serviceability last, because soldered memory, glued batteries and a single storage slot are what make a 14 mm case possible. Battery capacity trades the other way, measured in watt-hours (Wh): moving from a 50 Wh pack to a 99 Wh pack roughly doubles runtime and adds 300 to 400 g. Screen finish is the same bargain in miniature. Glossy panels look richer and mirror every window behind you, while matte panels scatter that reflection and soften fine text slightly.

Staying alive is mostly heat and dust. Air enters through slots on the underside, so a duvet or a lap blanket can lift internal temperature by 10 to 15 C and hold it there. Clear dust from the vents every 6 to 12 months, holding the fan blade still so it cannot spin faster than it was built for. Lithium batteries lose about 20 percent of their capacity across 300 to 500 full charge cycles, roughly two to four years of daily use, and heat plus a permanent 100 percent charge speeds that up. A lid that stops closing flat or a trackpad that rises is a swelling battery, and that machine goes to service now. Install firmware and security updates rather than deferring them for a year, since firmware patches cover charging behavior, power management and the ports themselves. Keep a backup outside the laptop, because the common total loss is a stolen bag, not a dead chip.

Fit & sizing

  • Measure the bag before you buy the machine. A 14 inch laptop is about 31 by 22 cm and a 16 inch about 36 by 25 cm. A padded sleeve adds 2 cm on every side.
  • Weigh the charger with the laptop, not separately. A 65 W charger adds around 200 g and fits a pocket. Meanwhile, a 240 W gaming adapter adds 700 g to 1.1 kg and fits nothing.
  • Count what you plug in on a normal day, then confirm each port carries the speed and the video signal you need. A USB-C socket can be 5 Gbps with no display output at all, and two ports on one machine often differ.
  • Sit at your desk and measure the distance to the screen. At 50 to 60 cm a 14 inch panel at 1920 by 1200 stays crisp. By comparison, 15.6 inches at 1920 by 1080 starts showing letter edges.
  • Check battery capacity in watt-hours. Most airlines allow an installed battery up to 100 Wh without prior approval. Large laptops stop at 99 Wh, and anything above needs you to ask the airline first.
  • Type a full paragraph on the actual keyboard and use the arrow keys. Half-height arrow keys and a shortened right shift key are the two layouts buyers regret within a week.

  • Clear dust from the intake and exhaust vents every 6 to 12 months, holding the fan blade still with a toothpick so forced air cannot overspin it. Blocked fins are the usual reason a two-year-old laptop runs hotter and slower than it did new.
  • Never run heavy work on a bed, a cushion or a blanket. Blocking the underside slots raises internal temperature 10 to 15 C, and sustained heat is what ages both the battery and the thermal paste.
  • Use the 80 percent charge limit on desk days if the system offers one. Batteries lose about 20 percent of capacity across 300 to 500 full cycles. Sitting hot at 100 percent for months makes that arrive sooner.
  • Stop using a laptop whose lid will not close flat or whose trackpad has risen. That is a swelling battery, and it needs service now rather than after it splits the case.
  • Install firmware and system security updates instead of deferring them for a year. Firmware fixes charging behavior, fan curves and port faults that no application-level update can reach.
  • Keep one backup that lives outside the machine and test that you can open a file from it. The most common total loss is a stolen bag, not a failed drive.

Common questions

How much memory should I buy?
Sixteen GB is the working baseline for a desktop operating system: a browser with twenty tabs, a video call and an office suite will use 10 to 12 GB between them. Eight GB still runs light browsing and school documents but leaves no headroom. Choose 32 GB for video editing, virtual machines or large code builds. If the memory is soldered, this is a one-time decision.
Why does my laptop feel fast for ten minutes and then slow down?
That is thermal throttling. The chip is allowed to run above its steady wattage in short bursts, and that heats the case. It then lowers its own speed to stay under a temperature limit. Thin machines reach that point sooner because they hold less metal and smaller fans. A hard flat surface and clean vents help. A thicker case with two fans helps more.
Do I need discrete graphics if I never play games?
Usually not. Built-in graphics handle video playback, photo editing, several external screens and light three-dimensional work without complaint. A separate graphics chip pays for itself in modern games, rendering, heavy video effects and machine-learning tasks. It also costs 400 to 800 g of weight, an hour or two of battery and a much larger charger. Buy it for a job you can name.
What do the USB numbers actually mean?
The naming is a mess and nobody defends it. USB-C describes the connector shape and tells you nothing about speed. Behind that same oval you may get 5, 10, 20 or 40 Gbps. Video output and charging are separate features a port may or may not include. Ignore the marketing name and get three facts: speed in Gbps, whether it drives a display, and its charging wattage.
How long does a laptop battery last before it needs replacing?
Expect 300 to 500 full charge cycles before capacity falls to around 80 percent, which is two to four years of daily use. Heat is the accelerant, so a machine that runs hot and sits at 100 percent all day ages faster than one kept between 20 and 80 percent. Before you buy, check the replacement price and whether the pack is glued in or screwed in.
Is last year's model a good buy at 25 percent off?
Often, after one check. Find the stated end date for security and driver support. A discount on a machine with four years left is a real saving, while the same discount on a two-year-old model with 18 months left is not. Ask also whether the battery is fresh stock rather than a floor unit that has been charging on a shelf for a year.
Should I wait for Wi-Fi 7?
Only if your router already supports it. Wi-Fi 6E opened the 6 GHz band. This is emptier and shorter in range, and Wi-Fi 7 adds wider channels plus the ability to use two bands at once. Neither end helps alone, and neither raises the speed your internet plan delivers. On a home connection under 500 Mbps you will not see a difference.
Would a tablet with a keyboard do instead?
For reading, mail, video and handwritten notes, a tablet does the job at half the weight. For many windows at once, external drives, deep file trees or desktop-only software, the laptop still wins, and a tablet keyboard costs almost as much as the price gap. Test your three most-used applications on the tablet platform before you decide.
