A sealed air path
A vacuum is a sealed air path with a fan at one end and a mouth at the other. The motor spins a fan that pushes air out of the machine, pressure inside drops, and outside air rushes in through the only opening left to it, which is the floor head. Every machine in this category is a rearrangement of three decisions: where the motor sits, where the dirt lands, and whether anything disturbs the surface before the air arrives. Those decisions produce Upright Vacuums, Canister Vacuums, Cordless Stick Vacuums, Handheld Vacuums and Robot Vacuums, plus the wet machines that add a water circuit.
Suction against airflow
Two properties do the work and they pull against each other. Suction, the pressure difference, breaks the grip holding a particle to the surface. Airflow, the volume of air moving each minute, carries that particle up the tube into the bin. A narrow crevice tool has high suction and low flow; a wide floor head has the reverse. Leaks ruin both, so a cracked bin lid, a stretched seal or a pinhole in the hose costs you more cleaning than any difference between two motors. Carpet needs a third thing. Grit sits down in the pile held by friction and air alone will not lift it, so a brush roll spinning at a couple of thousand rpm has to flick the fibers and throw the dirt into the airstream. That same stiff bristle bar scatters cereal across a kitchen floor, and soft roller heads exist for exactly that reason.
Where the fine dust goes
What happens to the fine dust decides whether vacuuming helps an allergic household or makes the air worse for twenty minutes. A true HEPA filter catches 99.97 percent of particles at 0.3 micrometers, the size hardest to trap. But air takes the easy route: in a machine that is not sealed it slips past gaskets and out the seams, and the certified filter changes nothing. HEPA-type and HEPA-like are marketing words with no standard behind them. Bags help, because you lift the dust out in a closed sack rather than shaking a bin over a can. Headline numbers help less. Robot makers quote pascals, cordless makers quote air watts and corded uprights are still sold on amps or watts, none of which convert between formats or are measured at the floor.
Let your floors choose
Let your floors choose the format. Where more than half the area is medium or deep carpet, an Upright Vacuum with an adjustable head still does the deepest work per pass. Carpet Cleaners handle the wet extraction no dry machine can. Running costs separate them
Running costs separate these formats more than price does. Bags and filters are a small yearly outlay. A robot with a self-emptying dock adds dock bags on top of its filters, side brushes and rollers. Lithium packs fade after roughly 300 to 500 full charges, so a cordless stick used most days loses noticeable runtime in its third year. A replacement pack can cost a large share of what the machine cost new. Find out whether that pack is a part you can buy or a sealed component that ends the machine. Runtime claims come from the lowest mode with a non-powered tool: on maximum with the brush turning, expect 8 to 15 minutes, not the 40 to 60 on the box. Robots need you to handle tidying, since cables and rug tassels have to be off the floor before every run.
Cover the wand with your palm
Test what the box will not tell you. Cover the wand opening with your palm for a second while the machine runs. It should grab hard and the pitch should climb; a weak grab on a new machine means a leak. Push the floor head over your own carpet and listen for the brush slowing under load. Tilt the head and watch whether it keeps contact, because a head that lifts at the edge cannot clean along a baseboard. Then check the dull things that decide whether you keep it: filter and bag availability, cord length against your longest room, bin size against your household, and whether the brush roll lifts out without a tool for the hair you will cut off it.
Keeping the air path open
Keeping a vacuum alive is mostly keeping its air path open. A clogged filter costs more suction than any difference between two models, and it is the job almost everyone skips. Wash washable filters on schedule and give them a full 24 hours to dry, since a damp filter starves the motor and can burn it out. Cut hair off the brush roll before it stalls. Empty at the fill line rather than above it, because cyclone separation stops working once debris reaches the cone. Maintained this way a good corded machine runs 8 to 12 years; ignored, the same machine feels finished in three. The cause is nearly always a filter, a wrapped brush or a hidden clog rather than the motor.

Measure the clearance under your sofa, bed frame and kitchen toe-kick before buying a robot. Most need 3.5 to 4 inches to pass under and get back out. The one that fits with a quarter inch to spare is the one you will be freeing from under the couch every week.
Pace out your longest room from the nearest outlet to the far corner. Corded machines give 20 to 35 feet of cord plus hose reach. A cord 5 feet short of the corner means unplugging and replugging in the middle of every pass.
Lift the machine at the height you will actually carry it. An upright at 15 to 20 pounds pushes easily on the flat and fights you up 13 stairs, while a 6 pound cordless stick is light on the scale but holds its motor and bin at your wrist, which is what tires your arm.
Size the bin to the household, not the room. A stick holds 0.2 to 0.8 liters, which is one or two rooms in a home with a shedding dog. A bagged upright or canister holds 2 to 6 liters and runs for weeks between changes.
Check the parking spot before you buy. A wall-docked stick needs an outlet within about 6 feet and roughly 4 feet of clear wall height, and a robot dock wants around 1.5 feet clear each side and 4 feet in front or it will fail to redock.
Measure your tallest threshold and the thickest rug edge. Robots usually climb 0.6 to 0.8 inch; anything higher becomes a wall, and the room behind it silently never gets cleaned.

Caring for vacuums & floor care
Wash washable filters on the stated schedule, usually every one to three months, and give them a full 24 hours to dry before refitting. A filter put back damp restricts airflow, grows mold in days and can overheat the motor it is meant to protect.
Cut hair off the brush roll every four to six weeks, running scissors along the groove made for it. Wrapped hair stops the bristles reaching the pile, so the machine still sounds strong while collecting almost nothing from carpet, and it loads the belt or motor.
Empty at the fill line rather than above it. Cyclone separation stops working once debris reaches the cone, which means suction falls off well before the bin looks full. A bagged machine loses airflow through the bag surface long before the bag is packed.
Chase a rising motor pitch immediately. Disconnect the wand and hose and drop a coin through each one; if it does not fall out the far end there is a clog, and running a blocked machine cooks the motor while you assume it has simply gotten old.
On a robot, wipe the drop sensors on the underside with a dry cloth monthly and replace the side brush and filter every three to six months. Dust on those sensors makes a robot read a dark rug as a staircase and refuse to cross it.
Store lithium battery packs at room temperature and around half charge if the machine sits unused for a month. Heat above about 40 C, which is 104 F, permanently cuts capacity, and a garage or car in summer is not room temperature.

Common questions
How much suction do I actually need?
Less than the marketing suggests, and it is the wrong question anyway. A sealed air path, a floor head that keeps contact and a clean filter change pickup far more than motor size does. Figures come as pascals, air watts or amps depending on the format, and none convert between brands. If you want a number, use an independent pickup test on carpet and hard floor.
Robot or cordless stick, if I can only have one?
Take the stick. A robot cannot do stairs, cannot clean edges properly and cannot deal with a spilled bag of rice. So it works as a second machine rather than the only one. Robots earn their place on a single level with floors that stay clear, where daily repetition keeps dust down. On cluttered floors they create work instead of saving it.
Bagged or bagless?
Bagged for allergies and low fuss: the dust comes out sealed, and 2 to 6 liters lasts weeks. Budget 6 to 12 bags a year plus a filter or two. Bagless costs nothing to run and shows you what it picked up, but tipping a cyclone bin puts fine dust straight back into the air. So empty it outdoors or into a lined can.
Do I really need a HEPA filter?
Only alongside a sealed body, or it does nothing. HEPA means 99.97 percent capture at 0.3 micrometers, the hardest particle size to trap, but air follows the easiest route, and in an unsealed machine that route runs around the filter and out through the seams. Look for sealed system stated on the machine. HEPA-type and HEPA-like have no standard behind them.

How often should I actually vacuum?
Once a week through the main paths is the baseline, plus an extra pass or two for each shedding pet and for any entrance without a doormat. Grit is what wears carpet out, and it does its damage while sitting in the pile. Give high-traffic strips two or three slow passes rather than one fast one, because a single quick pass leaves most embedded grit behind.
Why does my vacuum smell?
Almost always something wet or organic in a machine built for dry dust. Check the filter first, since one refitted damp grows mold within days. Then look at the brush roll and hose for milk, food or pet accident residue, and at the bin seal for a film you only smell once the motor warms up. Replace foam filters yearly rather than washing them forever.
