What to know about Ultra Short Throw Projector
A throw ratio of 0.19 to 0.35 puts an Ultra Short Throw Projector on a console 4 to 18 inches from the wall, firing light steeply upward onto the screen above it. That arrangement removes the ceiling mount, the long cable run and the shadow of anyone walking past. Nearly all use a laser light source and make 2,500 to 3,500 ANSI lumens. Many use three separate red, green and blue lasers to cover the wide color space that cinema releases are graded in.
The screen is not optional here. A ceiling light rejecting surface, sometimes sold as a lenticular screen, has a sawtooth structure angled to accept light arriving from below and reject light coming from above. This is what keeps the picture watchable with a lamp on. That same surface ruins the image from a Home Theater Projector or a Short Throw Projector, and a standard angular reflective screen made for long throw fails just as badly the other way. Match the screen to the projector class or buy neither.
Choose this when a large television is impractical: an apartment where a 100 inch panel will not clear the stairwell, a rented room where drilling the ceiling is out, or a living room where the screen has to live above existing furniture. It suits daytime viewing better than any long throw design. Avoid it if the wall bows, if the cabinet gets bumped, or if you want a picture larger than about 120 inches, where the geometry gets fussy and the brightness thins out.
Alignment is the real specification. A lens working at that angle magnifies every error, so a millimeter of movement in the cabinet shows as a bent edge on screen. The digital geometry correction that fixes it costs sharpness. Check the total price with the screen included, since the screen often runs a quarter of the bill. Look for a stated distance from the wall rather than from the lens, listen for fan noise at seated level a few feet away. Ask whether the built in speakers can be bypassed to a sound system.
Set it once with a spirit level and a tape measure, then mark the cabinet position with tape so a cleaning day does not cost you an evening of realignment. Keep the upward facing lens window covered when not in use, because dust settling directly on it scatters light. Wipe the screen only as the maker specifies, since the optical layer scratches and cannot be repaired.
