What to know about soundbars & home audio

Getting sound out of the television

Home audio covers everything that takes sound out of the television and puts it into the room: a bar under the screen, a bar plus a bass cabinet, a full set of speakers driven by a receiver, a stereo pair on stands, a wireless speaker on a shelf, a record player feeding any of them. Physics is why the category exists. A panel 1 to 2 inches deep can only hold drivers about 1.5 inches across, usually firing down at the shelf or back at the wall. A driver that small moves too little air to produce much below 150 Hz. Voices thin out, impacts land flat, and raising the volume makes that thin sound louder without making it clearer.

Reading a number like 5.1.2

Channel counts are written as three numbers, 5.1.2 for example. The first counts speakers at ear level, the second counts subwoofers, the third counts height channels aimed upward to bounce off the ceiling. A bar with a 5 in front of it does not contain five loudspeakers spread around you; it groups drivers in one cabinet and steers sound at your side walls, which works in a rectangular room with hard walls inside about 12 feet and falls apart in an open plan. Object-based formats, sold as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, treat sounds as positions rather than fixed channels, and the up-firing trick needs a flat hard ceiling 8 to 11 feet up. Vaulted, beamed or acoustic-tile ceilings scatter that reflection and you hear almost nothing. Virtual, placed in front of any of these words, means processing rather than a speaker. Underneath sits the crossover, the frequency where the bar hands bass to the subwoofer and usually set near 80 Hz; how cleanly that handover happens separates a system that sounds whole from two products sharing a room.

Match it to floor area

Match the equipment to floor area and to what you watch. Under about 150 square feet, a bedroom or small apartment, a Compact Soundbar fixes dialogue with one cable and no floor space. In an ordinary 200 to 350 square foot living room, a Soundbar with Subwoofer changes the most per dollar spent. Rooms where seats sit at least 2 feet clear of the back wall, and where cable can be run or hidden, can justify a Surround System. Music first and television second points at Bookshelf Speakers 6 to 8 feet apart with your seat completing a rough triangle. Several wired sources, or a system meant to grow, calls for an AV Receiver. Patios and rooms that change use suit Wireless Speakers, and a record collection needs a Turntable with a phono stage. Anyone in the house who struggles to follow speech gains from a bar with a real center driver, not from more treble.

Bass ignores walls

Bass is the loudest thing you own and it ignores walls. A 10 or 12 inch subwoofer in a flat travels through the structure to neighbors long after dialogue has stopped. A sealed 8 inch cabinet at a moderate level is the version that keeps the peace. Surround costs cable and floor space, and a rear speaker parked 12 inches from one ear sounds worse than no rear speaker. Channel counts split a fixed budget: a 5.1.2 bar priced against a good 2.1 gets there with smaller drivers and less amplifier behind each one. Wireless describes the audio link between bar and subwoofer and never the power, so every box still needs an outlet. Packaged systems often accept only their own maker's rear speakers, which turns the first purchase into a decision about the next three.

Start at the connection

Start at the connection, because it decides which formats can even reach the bar. HDMI eARC, the enhanced audio return channel, carries lossless and object-based soundtracks over one cable and lets the television remote set volume. Optical caps out at compressed 5.1 near 640 kbps, and plain ARC adds only compressed formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, so lossless soundtracks need eARC whatever the box promises. Test at the volume you use, not showroom loud. Play dialogue at the level you would pick at 10 at night and see whether you follow it. Look for a physically separate center driver, an adjustable subwoofer level and a crossover control, since a fixed sub level tells you the maker designed for one room. With speakers, read sensitivity, often 86 to 90 dB, against the amplifier's rated impedance in ohms, and trust power figures that state all channels driven, not one channel at 1 kHz. Real buttons and a readable display beat an app that needs a phone to change input.

Placement beats upgrading

Placement returns more improvement than any upgrade at this price. Move the subwoofer around the floor while something bass-heavy plays, or sit it in your listening seat, crawl the room and put it where the bass sounded evenest. Corners add level and usually add boom with it. Recheck the television audio output and lip-sync offset after every platform update, because updates often reset both and the bar gets blamed. Leave a receiver 4 inches of open air above it and never rest a player on the lid, since amplifiers shed heat upward and an overheated output stage shuts down mid-film. Vacuum grilles with a soft brush head, keep bass ports clear. On a record player fit a fresh stylus around 800 to 1000 playing hours, before a worn tip starts cutting the groove.

Fit

Fit & sizing

  • Keep the bar narrower than the screen. A 65 inch set is about 57 inches wide. A bar of 40 to 48 inches sits right underneath it and anything past 55 inches starts to overhang. Wider does not mean louder or better.
  • Measure the gap under the panel. Most sets leave 2 to 3 inches between the shelf and the bottom of the screen. A taller bar covers part of the picture and blocks the remote sensor. Hold a book of the bar's height in place and try the remote before you order.
  • Give the subwoofer a floor spot with an outlet inside its cord length, usually 5 to 6 feet, and 6 to 12 inches of clearance in front of a forward-firing port. Shut inside a cabinet it will rattle the door and lose output.
  • Rear surround speakers belong slightly behind the seats and 2 to 3 feet above seated ear height, roughly 5 feet off the floor, with at least 3 feet between a speaker and the nearest ear. If the sofa backs onto a wall, that geometry does not exist and the money belongs in a subwoofer instead.
  • Set bookshelf speakers so the tweeter, the small high-frequency driver, sits at seated ear height near 36 to 38 inches, which means stands of 24 to 26 inches on most sofas. Rear-ported cabinets need 8 to 12 inches of clear wall behind them.
  • Count receiver connections before buying: one input per source plus the output to the screen, then measure cabinet depth with plugs attached, since plugs add around 3 inches behind the chassis, a total that defeats a lot of shallow furniture.

Care

Caring for soundbars & home audio

  • Re-select the television audio output and check lip sync after each platform update, because updates often revert both settings and the symptom looks exactly like a failing soundbar.
  • Leave at least 4 inches of open air above an AV receiver and never stack a console or player on the lid. Amplifiers dump heat upward, and an output stage that overheats will mute itself in the middle of a film.
  • Dust grilles with a soft brush rather than pressing a cloth into them, and keep bass ports unobstructed. A blocked port changes the cabinet tuning and adds a chuffing noise at high volume.
  • Re-run room correction whenever seating or large furniture moves, then check the crossover and channel distances it chose. A microphone reading taken from the wrong spot can leave one channel several dB low for years without anyone noticing.
  • Save your settings before firmware updates and play a test tone through every channel afterward, since a silent rear speaker can go undetected for months once you stop expecting sound from it.
  • Fit a fresh turntable stylus at roughly 800 to 1000 playing hours and brush the record and the tip before each side. A worn or gritty tip grinds the groove wall, and that damage never comes out of the record.

Common questions

Do I need Dolby Atmos?
Only if your ceiling cooperates. Up-firing drivers bounce sound off a flat, hard ceiling 8 to 11 feet high; vaulted, sloped, beamed or acoustic-tile ceilings scatter the reflection and most of the effect disappears. In a plain rectangular room it adds a genuine sense of height. In every room, a subwoofer changes everyday listening more.
Soundbar or separate speakers for the same money?
Separate speakers win on sound almost every time, because two cabinets 6 feet apart create a stereo image no single bar can imitate. The bar wins on cable count, appearance and one remote controlling everything. Decide by whether you will accept stands, speaker wire and an amplifier in the room. If not, the bar is the better buy.
More channels or a subwoofer first?
Subwoofer, and it is not close. A slim bar has no cabinet volume to make anything under about 80 Hz, so a 2.1 system with a real bass box hits harder than a 5.0 bar without one. Extra channels only repay you when the room lets you place or reflect them. Add height and surround later.
What is eARC, and does the cable matter?
eARC, the enhanced audio return channel, sends sound back from the television to the bar over one HDMI cable with enough bandwidth for lossless and object-based tracks. Optical carries compressed 5.1 only, and plain ARC stops at compressed formats such as Dolby Digital Plus. Both the television port and the bar must support eARC, and the cable should be rated high speed, which most recent ones are.
Will my neighbors hear the subwoofer?
Low frequencies pass through floors and shared walls far better than voices do, so yes, if you run it hard. A sealed 8 inch cabinet at a moderate level on an isolation pad rather than bare floorboards is the neighborly setup. Night mode trims the peaks that travel furthest. A 12 inch ported box in a flat will be heard.
Why is dialogue still hard to follow?
Film mixes put speech in a center channel and set effects much louder around it, so a bar with no real center driver spreads voices across everything. Try the speech or clarity setting, switch on night mode, which narrows the gap between loud and quiet, and drop the subwoofer level a few dB. If none of that helps, the bar lacks a center and always will.
Can one remote control everything?
Usually, through HDMI-CEC, a control signal that travels alongside audio and video, though every maker gives it a different trade name in the menu. Enable it at both ends. Connected over eARC, the television remote then handles volume and mute, and selecting an input can wake the bar. Optical connections normally leave you juggling two remotes.
Do powered speakers replace a receiver?
For music and one television, often yes: powered bookshelf speakers carry their own amplification and take HDMI, optical or analog input directly. A receiver earns its space when several wired sources need switching, you want surround decoding, or you plan to drive passive speakers you chose separately. The catch with powered pairs is that one failed internal amplifier can silence both cabinets.
