All-in-One Desktop

Everything except the keyboard and mouse lives behind the screen in an All-in-One Desktop. Panels usually run 24 to 32 inches. The computing hardware inside is laptop class: a mobile processor of 15 to 45 watts, SODIMM memory modules, the short sticks laptops use, one or two M.2 drives, built in speakers, microphones and a webcam. Cooling is a small fan and a thin heat pipe. Many models hang on a 100 by 100 mm wall mount, and the whole assembly draws 40 to 120 watts.

A Mini PC bolted to the back of a monitor produces the same tidy desk and keeps the two lives separate, which matters because in an all-in-one the panel and the computer age out together. Reception counters, kitchen corners, small apartments, family rooms and classrooms suit it, particularly where a visible tangle of cables is unwelcome. Video calling is stronger than average because the camera and microphones sit at eye level rather than below the chin. Skip it if you play modern games, need a graphics card, run several internal drives, or want to keep a good panel after the computer slows down. Repairs mean removing the display, so labor costs more than on any other shape.

Judge the screen exactly as you would a standalone one: resolution against size, brightness in nits, and whether the finish is glossy or matte, since a glossy 27 inch panel facing a window mirrors the room. Check three things that separate models sharply. Does it accept an external video input, which lets the panel outlive the computer? Are memory and drive reachable through a service hatch? How far does the stand tilt and rise, since most raise the screen less than 110 mm.

Vents sit along the back or top edge, so leave 10 cm of clear air there and never push it flush against a wall. Clean the glass with a dry microfiber cloth alone, because household cleaners dissolve anti glare coatings and leave permanent cloud. Avoid pressing the screen when moving the unit; lift from the base and the top edge instead. Back up to an external drive or a cloud service, since a failed part here often means the machine leaves your desk for a week.
