Small Form Factor PC (Desktop Computers)

Between the tower and the mini sits the Small Form Factor PC, usually 10 to 20 liters, built around a 170 by 170 mm Mini-ITX board or a slim microATX one. A shorter power supply standard called SFX replaces the full size ATX unit, and a ribbon style riser cable folds the graphics card so it lies alongside the board rather than behind it. You get two memory slots, one expansion slot and one or two drives. Desktop grade processors and full length graphics cards still fit.

Compared with a Tower Desktop, the volume drops by half or more and the upgrade room drops with it, since one slot and two memory sockets is the whole allowance. A Mini PC is smaller again but cannot take a card at all. An All-in-One Desktop matches the tidiness and loses the graphics performance. This style exists for one purpose: full desktop speed in a box you can carry with one hand and stand beside a television or on a shallow desk.

Apartments, living rooms, shared studios and desks under 60 cm deep benefit most, as does anyone who moves a machine between homes or to gaming events. Think twice if you want several internal drives, a large air cooler, or the quietest possible machine at high power, because compressing 400 watts of heat into 15 liters means faster fans. Costs run 15 to 30 percent above an equivalent tower once you count the small power supply and the case itself.

Three clearance figures decide whether a build works: maximum card length, usually 300 to 340 mm; maximum card thickness, quoted in slots, where many current cards need three; and maximum cooler height, often just 55 to 70 mm. Check that the side panel does not sit within a few millimeters of the card's intake fans, since a starved fan gets loud without moving more air. Look for removable panels on several sides, because servicing one of these through a single opening is really unpleasant.

Filters clog faster here than in a tower simply because the same dust meets a smaller intake area, so clean them monthly. Leave 5 cm clear on every ventilated side and never place the case on carpet or a rug. Watch temperatures for the first week under your real workload and adjust fan curves rather than accepting the factory setting. When you replace a part, take a photo before disconnecting anything, since cable routing in these cases has only one correct answer.
