Budget distribution is what separates a Gaming Desktop from any other tower. 40 to 60 percent of the money goes to the graphics card, with the case, cooling and power supply chosen to keep that card fed. Expect a high airflow case, a 750 to 1000 watt supply, 16 or 32 GB of memory and an NVMe drive of 1 TB or more, since current games install at 60 to 150 GB each. A Workstation Desktop may use similar hardware but pays for validated drivers and error correcting memory instead of frame rates. A Small Form Factor PC can hold the same card in a third of the space, louder and dearer. Against a Gaming Laptop, the desktop runs the same tier of graphics 20 to 40 percent faster because nothing limits its power draw, costs less, and stays where it is. Buy it around the screen you actually own. At 1080p, the processor limits frame rates more than the card does. So a mid range card paired with a good processor is the efficient choice. At 1440p and 4K the card becomes the limit and extra processor cores stop helping. Video memory sets the ceiling on texture quality. 8 GB is where new titles begin forcing settings down at 1440p, and 12 to 16 GB leaves headroom. Read the power supply's wattage and its connector type, because cards drawing over 300 watts want the newer 12V-2x6 plug and a supply designed for their millisecond spikes. Check case airflow honestly: a solid glass front panel with no side intake starves the card no matter how many fans are fitted. Dust hurts here more than anywhere, since a graphics card fin stack clogs fast and the card is the hottest thing in the case. Clean filters monthly and the card's fins twice a year. Update graphics drivers every month or two, but read the release notes first, because a new driver occasionally breaks one game. Set a fan curve you can live with instead of leaving the aggressive factory profile.
