How high is the heel, and what can you actually walk in?

What makes a boot a boot

A boot is footwear that keeps going where a shoe stops: the shaft, the section wrapping your leg, rises past the ankle bone and can climb to mid calf, the knee, or beyond. That shaft is the defining part, and it is why the word boot alone tells you almost nothing about a given pair. A chelsea and a snow boot share the name while sharing no purpose, no construction, and no season.

Welted, cemented or molded

How a boot is put together decides what it can survive. Welted boots stitch the upper to a welt, a leather strip running around the sole's edge.   • With the boot laced or zipped, walk ten steps: your heel should lift no more than about a quarter inch, because anything beyond that grinds skin into a blister by the end of a day.
  • Kick your toes gently forward on a downward slope or stair; toes that touch the front need more length, since descents drive the whole foot forward.
  • Sit down in a tall boot before buying it, because a top edge that digs into the back of your knee when seated is too tall for your leg whatever the listed height.

How do I know if I need wide calf boots?
Stand and measure the widest part of your calf, since the muscle spreads under load, then add half an inch to an inch of ease, more for over-jeans wear. Compare the total to the listed shaft circumference. Regular shafts run about 14 to 16 inches, so a calf over roughly 15 inches usually needs a wide calf cut. Shoe size predicts none of this; leg and foot are separate fits.
Why do my new boots slip at the heel?
Stiff new soles cannot flex at the ball yet, so your heel lifts instead. In pull-on styles like westerns, up to a quarter inch of slip is normal and disappears as the sole breaks in. My tall boots slide down my leg. Is that fixable?
Usually, yes. Sliding means the shaft is too wide at the top for your leg, so it has nothing to grip. A cobbler can take in the shaft along its back seam, elastic-backed styles solve the problem at purchase. Silicone-striped boot bands add grip inside the top edge. Height is rarely the culprit; a properly snug shaft stays up even at the knee.
Do waterproof boots stop being waterproof?
The factory water repellent on leather and fabric wears off within a few months of steady use. So boots that shrugged off rain in October soak through by March. Re-treat each season with the product made for that upper. Molded rubber never wets through but cracks with age and heat, and membrane boots fail at seams and flex points once their fabric abrades.
