Removable Insole

A removable insole sits in the shoe unglued, shaped to lift out in one piece. What matters is the room the removal creates: a custom orthotic or pharmacy insert takes the original's place at the original depth. That means the shoe fits with the orthotic the way it fit before. Placing an insert on top of a fixed footbed instead raises the foot 3-5 mm. That stolen depth is why shoes go tight across the instep and heels start slipping out with every step.

Anyone prescribed orthotics should filter for this feature before weighing anything else about a shoe, because every alternative arrangement compromises something: a crowded instep, a heel perched above its counter, or an orthotic left at home. Depth deserves a check too, since shoes designed around orthotics are cut a few millimeters deeper so the swap leaves standard room for the foot.

Hygiene is the second dividend. An insole that lifts out airs overnight, washes when it smells, and can simply be replaced for a few dollars once its cushioning packs down, extending the shoe's comfortable life well past the original footbed's. Checking takes a second: reach in and lift at the heel edge. A glued-down footbed pretending otherwise tears rather than lifts.
