The basics

What to know about memory foam

Memory foam is viscoelastic polyurethane: press it and it compresses slowly, release it and it recovers slowly, and warmth makes it softer still. In a footbed, body heat and pressure shape it to your individual footprint within minutes, spreading load away from bony pressure points and producing the walking-on-pillows sensation that sells the material in the first ten seconds of a try-on.

Cushioning and support are different jobs, and memory foam does only the first. The material yields wherever it is pressed, so it sinks under a collapsing arch exactly as readily as under a sore heel, holding nothing up. Shoes that pair a molded, structured footbed with a thin memory layer on top get both jobs done. A thick slab of foam alone gets one.

Two aging problems come with the chemistry. Compression set is permanent. Under daily wear the foam thins and firms noticeably within 6-12 months, and the shoe quietly stops doing what it was bought for. Heat retention is the other: the dense foam insulates. Feet run warmer, and in summer the material softens as it warms, sometimes to the point of feeling mushy underfoot. Heavy daily wearers and hot climates get the least from it.
