What to know about knee-high
A knee-high shaft measures about 14" to 18" and stops just below the kneecap, covering the calf completely. Because the top edge lands where the leg naturally narrows, the height flatters more reliably than mid-calf. It draws one continuous line from knee to floor. That is why this is the tall boot worn with dresses and skirts.
Height is only half the fit. A shaft covering the whole calf must clear its widest circumference, so calf width becomes as decisive as foot size. Even a knee-high that fits perfectly at the foot is unwearable if the shaft will not close. It gapes if cut generously for a slimmer leg. Wrap a tape around the fullest part of your calf while standing. Add 0.5" to 1" for ease, more over jeans. Then match that number against the boot's stated shaft circumference before considering anything else.
Get the top edge right too. Standing, the shaft should stop 1" to 2" below the crease at the back of your knee. Higher and it digs when you sit. Lower and it drifts toward the mid-calf problem. Skirts and dresses hemmed at or above the knee pair naturally, and slim trousers tuck in cleanly. Only wide-leg trousers exclude the height, since they neither tuck nor fall cleanly over a tall shaft. Against over-the-knee, knee-high delivers most of the coverage with none of the stay-up engineering.
