What to know about knit
A knit upper is built from interlocking loops of yarn rather than woven cloth or hide, and loops stretch in every direction. The upper conforms to the foot inside it: a bunion pushes the knit outward a few millimeters and meets no seam or edge, where a leather or woven upper would press back. No other material family forgives width, bumps and pressure points so completely.
Modern versions are engineered rather than uniform. The knitting machine changes stitch density across the single piece, placing open, stretchy structures where the foot flexes and tight, stable ones where it needs holding, at the heel and along the lacing. That zoning restores some of the support a plain sock-like knit lacks. It separates a good knit shoe from a cheap one: pinch the fabric at the heel and midfoot, and you should feel it firm up.
The limits are structural and environmental. Even zoned knit gives less side-to-side support than leather or overlays, which matters for court sports and rough ground. Rain passes straight through the loops, so a wet day means wet socks. Snags pull loops out of the face, and pale knit stains readily; most knit shoes machine wash cold, which recovers a great deal.

Knit uppers come off computer-controlled flat-knitting machines, the same class of machine that makes sweaters, programmed to produce a complete upper in a single piece shaped like an unrolled sock. As it works, the machine varies stitch structure, yarn feed and density zone by zone, knitting stretch into flex areas and stability into the heel and eyestay without a seam anywhere. Yarns are mostly polyester filament, often blended with elastane for recovery. Some zones are fused afterward with heat so they stiffen; recycled polyester from bottles has become a common feed. Because the upper leaves the machine essentially finished, cutting waste falls close to zero, against roughly a fifth of the material lost when panels are die-cut from hide or cloth. The construction gets marketed on sustainability as well as comfort.
