The basics
What to know about mid heel
Between 2" and 3" the heel starts doing real work. Weight moves noticeably onto the ball of the foot, the arch is held under tension, and the calf stays contracted through every step. Most wearers still walk normally at this height, which is exactly why the classic work pump lives here: maximum line for minimum retraining.
Heel type begins to outweigh height in this band. The same 2.5" reads stable on a broad block and precarious on a stiletto. Stability comes from the base area under your heel bone and how much correcting your ankle must do, not from the number. A 3" block outperforms a 2.5" stiletto on every surface. A listing that gives height without showing the heel from behind has told you half the story.
Plan the hours, not just the height. A well-fitted mid heel with a cushioned forefoot covers a workday of desk and meetings. The same shoe fails on a day with two miles of pavement. By hour eight the ball of the foot carries most of your body weight. A gel forefoot pad, or a hidden 0.25" platform under the toe, buys back a surprising share of that pressure. Against the high band, mid keeps a natural gait; above 3" the gait itself changes. Every extra quarter inch gets paid for in stride length.
