What to know about cushioned heel
Each walking step lands on the heel with roughly 1.5 times body weight, and running multiplies that further. A cushioned heel puts a dedicated shock-absorbing element, a gel pad, an air unit or a dense foam pod, directly under that strike zone to compress on landing, taking the sting out of hard surfaces before it travels up through the leg.
The benefit concentrates exactly where the feature sits. Concrete and tile transmit impact that soil and carpet absorb. The difference shows most for people who walk or stand on hard floors for hours, and heel pain, including the sharp first-steps-of-the-morning kind, responds to it directly. Burning under the ball of the foot does not, since that is forefoot pressure, a separate problem wanting a lower pitch or forefoot padding instead. Match the cushioning to the location of your pain, not to the size of the claim.
Judging quality takes a thumb and a squeeze. A working heel element compresses visibly under firm pressure and springs back at once; padding you cannot compress by hand will not compress under a heel strike either. Foam pods pack down over months, gel and air units keep their behavior longer but can be punctured. On cheap shoes the visible pod is sometimes printed decoration around an ordinary midsole.
