Beret (Hats)

One circle of wool, felted until it will not fray, gathered into a leather or grosgrain band. No seams, no lining, no brim and no stiffening anywhere in the hat.

Felting explains everything a beret does. The wool is knitted much larger than the finished size, then washed hot and agitated until the fibers lock into a dense sheet that can be cut without unraveling. That is why the edge needs no hem and why the crown drapes wherever you push it. Fit comes only from the band, so there is almost no give: a beret either sits on your head or it does not.

Fabric aside, a beanie behaves nothing like this. A beanie is knitted stretchy and pulled down over the ears, where a beret rests flat on the crown and leaves the ears bare. A cloche also shows no visible structure but is blocked into a bell that grips the skull down to the brows. Set against a fedora, this adds no height at all. This is the point: it shapes the outline of your head without changing your proportions.

It works when you want shape without extra height. It is one of the few hats that sits happily over a fringe, since nothing presses on the forehead. Mild cold and city wear suit the weight, which is a fraction of a felt hat. Rain is the failure case, because felted wool soaks up water, sags under it and dries a size larger.

Thickness is the thing to test. Pinch the crown between finger and thumb, since a dense felt resists while a thin one flattens to almost nothing and wears through at the top within two seasons. The small stem on top should be knitted in rather than glued on. Wash by hand in cool water, then reshape it damp over a dinner plate and let it dry flat, which restores the circle. Hanging it wet on a hook pulls the crown into a point.
