Blanket Scarf

At roughly 55 to 60 inches a side, a blanket scarf is closer to a garment than to neckwear. The cloth is brushed wool or a wool blend, heavy enough to hang in folds and hold them where you put them.

Weight is what makes it work and what limits it. A dense twill weave, where the yarns cross on a diagonal, resists wind in a way a loose knit cannot. The raw ends are usually fringed by pulling threads out of the weave rather than hemming. This is quick to produce and slowly gets longer if you keep tugging at it. Folded corner to corner into a triangle and laid over the shoulders, it works like a shawl and adds roughly the warmth of a light sweater.

An evening wrap runs similar dimensions in the long direction with almost none of the weight, since it exists to cover bare shoulders indoors rather than block wind. A square scarf is the same shape at a third of the size and made for print rather than warmth. An oblong scarf wraps the neck and leaves the shoulders open entirely. Nothing else here doubles as an actual blanket on a train, which is why many people buy one.

Buy it for cold outdoor waiting, drafty offices or long car journeys, where the bulk earns its place. Anyone who runs cold gets more from this than from a second sweater, because it comes off in one movement. Petite frames struggle, as 60 inches of heavy cloth cannot be sized down and swamps a small body. Shoulder bags are a problem too, since the strap slides straight off the fabric.

Squeeze a handful hard and release. Wool springs back within a second or two, while heavy acrylic stays crushed and shines where it was pressed. The fringe should be a continuation of the weave rather than a separate strip sewn on, because sewn fringe pulls away. Air it after wear instead of washing it every time, and when it does need cleaning wash cool and dry flat. Wet wool at this weight will stretch several inches if you hang it.
