What to know about Titanium (Eyeglass Frames)
Two forms of the metal reach eyewear and they behave differently. Commercially pure titanium is strong, light and stubborn: it holds an adjustment beautifully and resists being adjusted in the first place. A workshop needs proper pliers and patience. Beta titanium, an alloy with other metals added, gives far more spring, bends into shape more willingly and returns to true after being sat on. A third material sometimes sold under the same banner is nitinol, an alloy of nickel and titanium marketed as memory metal, which springs back from extreme bends but does contain nickel. It is not the automatic choice for reactive skin.
Weight is the headline. Around 10 to 15 grams is normal, against 25 to 35 for a comparable acetate front. That difference stops being abstract somewhere in the sixth hour of a working day. Corrosion is the quieter benefit. Titanium forms its own stable surface layer. So it needs no protective plating to survive sweat, salt water or humidity. It has no plating to wear through and expose a reactive base metal underneath. Color comes from anodizing, an electrical process that grows a thin oxide layer whose thickness decides the tint. Titanium blues and bronzes look faintly iridescent.
Ordinary alloy frames cost less and can be soldered when they break, which is a genuine advantage. Acetate offers bulk and pattern that titanium cannot. Drill mounted frames lean on titanium heavily, since their parts are tiny and highly stressed. Weigh a titanium front against a stainless one of identical size and the gap is real but smaller than marketing suggests; against acetate it is dramatic.
Heavy prescriptions, long working days, hot climates, frequent travel and any history of skin reaction all argue for it. Children are the exception, as the cost of a frame that cannot be soldered rarely survives a school year.
Look for a marking such as Ti, Ti-P or beta titanium stamped inside the temple, and treat an unmarked claim with suspicion. A magnet gives a rough hint, since titanium does not respond, though several stainless grades barely respond either. Ask before buying whether the shop can laser weld, because most cannot, and a snapped titanium temple has no cheap ending.
